The Civil War
The Conflict
Prelude
Tariel's first formal form of government was a monarchy led by a human royal family. Over the years, many humans started to think of themselves as superior to other races as the ruling family had always been humans. This led to enslavement of other races (such as dramatically lower pay for the same job as the human equivalent) which eventually became more and more widespread. Meanwhile, the elves, dwarves, orcs, and dragonborn of Tariel began to commiserate with each other about the conduct. Small groups began to form, and organized protests against their treatment. The largest of these called themselves EDOD. They also secretly distributed printed literature about racial equality. Tensions between humans and elves/orcs rose around this time as elvish and orcish territory was invaded by humans for logging. The racial protests increased, and demonstrations such as sit-ins and sabotages at logging camps became more frequent. King Whitney's tacit approval and inaction caused further pressure. On August 5th, the king was found in his bed with his throat slit. Initial investigations revealed that one of his servants was responsible and they were executed. As his heir was too young and sickly to rule, a regency took hold. The regency took action against the protest groups, and violently repressed EDOD organizations and meetings. Many members were arrested, and others mysteriously disappeared. The regency also established curfews on non-humans. In retaliation, EDOD organized violent disruptions of symbols of human oppression. These included attacks on police stations, government buildings, and military barracks. The regency declared an emergency. They passed the Crisis Control Laws, which took away all freedoms from non-humans and included moving non-humans in the worst-hit cities into camps for security. Kip held the largest one of these. At this time, sizable numbers of humans around the continent (especially in the north) objected to these actions and started to organize protests and marches. EDOD and the other resistance organizations then banded together and formally declared independence from the human monarchy and government. At that time, Port Town and the Lemarin humans announced their neutrality. However, many humans in the north ended up joining the war anyway.
