Dæmon
Spawn of Khyber, creatures of Chaos that seek to unravel the structure of the universe and return it to it's primordial state.
Dæmons are impossible to classify by their very nature as beings that are essentially sentient chaos. However due in large part to the study by the demonologist Iggwilv some basic facts have been established:
Basic Information
Anatomy
The only common anatomical feature between dæmons are their Khyber Shard hearts.
Biological Traits
There is no uniformity to the biology of dæmons, as they seemingly absorb and adapt to their environments, but they share some similar traits, including the ability to utilize raw chaos energy called Cero. They also have an adverse effect on the Weave and almost all of them either interfere or are resistant to magic.
Dæmons vary greatly in anatomy, morphology, intelligence, and abilities, often reflecting their environment. Exposure to new setting can cause drastic changes in a dæmon in very short amounts of time. In one experiment Demons found on a fiery layer of the Abyss were dropped into a glacier, in a matter of a week they adapted and developed ice abilities. Researchers noted that they retained some of their fire powers as well, although significantly dampaned.
Genetics and Reproduction
Dæmons are said to form from raw chaos often referred to as Cero. There is little research on what causes a collection of raw chaos to gain sentience. It is postulated, that raw chaos energy coalesces around a Khyber Shard until it reaches critical mass and becomes a young demon.
Growth Rate & Stages
Demons seem to evolve based on their environment. However one sure way of evolution is devouring souls of mortals, which sparks explosive improvements in dæmons.
Young dæmons are usually small, mindless, and of a spongy physical nature enclosing the Khyber Shard within. As they grow older and stronger they begin to take on a more solid shape.
It is worth noting that as dæmons mature their Khyber Shard grow larger and more potent making them more enticing to prospectors.
Ecology and Habitats
Dæmons are native to the Abyss, and reflect the Maw's chaotic nature.
Additional Information
Social Structure
The only social structure for dæmons is power. Stronger dæmons will bully weaker ones into submission and lead small gangs of them.
Ancient powerful dæmons are known as Lords; frightening monstrosities that often claim large swathes of the Abyss, and hordes of lesser dæmons.
The strongest of the dæmons are known as Overlords. Only 22 have been identified with a supposed number of 30. These being rivaled the Gods in power and were the generals of the dæmon hordes during the Dawn War. Most of them were sealed away on Tartarus by the gods prior to the mortal age but they strain against their prisons and scheme to break free to return their world to it's primordial state.
Domestication
Through powerful magic it is possible to bind a dæmon temporarily. Iggwilv suggested that through a steady diet of souls it is even possible to keep one loyal, but warned that at the slightest sign of weakness the dæmon will rip off the hand that feeds it.
Uses, Products & Exploitation
While dæmons were summoned during the Great War as shock troops, currently the major reason for summoning dæmons is to harvest Khyber Shards.
Average Intelligence
While they are chaotic creatures of destruction, dæmons are not mindless and some older specimens posses an uncanny intelligence.
Scientific Name
Dæmon
Lifespan
For all intents and purposes dæmons are immortal.
