Prospectors and adventurers dig up smoky purple Khyber Shards, also called Demon Stones, from deep underground. Their critical role in elemental binding and the difficulty of acquiring them makes them extremely expensive and lucrative.
The main quality of Khyber Shards is the ability to trap essences of creatures. They are invaluable to enchanters, elementalists, and necromancer. There are many uses for these stones, an enchanter who trapped a fire elemental in a Khyber shard can set it into a weapon to get a flaming weapon, an elementalist can channel the power of an elemental trapped in the gem into a spell, and a necromancer can use a Khyber Shard to trap a soul and use it to create more intelligent or powerful undead. There are even rumors of vile soul practices, where trapped souls in Khyber Shards can be tapped for immense magical fuel.
There are two ways of acquiring Khyber Shards. They grow in clusters in areas deep underground where chaos energy runs rampart, and extracted from
dæmons. Because of this some refer to them as chaos stones, or dæmon hearts.
Game Effects
Khyber shards are an important aspect of elemental binding but can be used to entrap many entities and serve as a necessary material component for such spells. Without a trapped creature, a Khyber shard functions as a base for the Manastone spell, mages can pour energy into it, but it does not regenerate. In certain situations it can be used as a Powerstone, first a creature needs to be trapped in it, then based on the spirit's power it can be tapped like a Powerstone for energy aspected to the creature trapped inside, which recovers normally, and can be accelerated by placing the shard in an element related to the creature trapped inside. The downside to Khyber shards is if broken, whatever is trapped inside is released, and may not be friendly towards a mage who has been using it as a battery. When it comes to enchanting items with a Khyber shard, enchantments related to the spirit are enhanced but the enchantment needs to be cast with the Khyber shard and it becomes a dedicated powerstone for the enchantment. Without a trapped creature it cannot be used for the Powerstone spell, it cannot be a base for the Spellstone spell, and it's the only stone that can be used as a manastone.
