Personal history

Born to a lower class family in Port Damali Vanessa Dumas, the person who'd become Célestine, was the oldest of 7 children. Her immediate childhood was uneventful - too busy running around after her siblings for her parents - that when Vanessa reached her early to mid teens (14 - 16) she rebelled. Choosing to take their future into their own hands, they started getting into trouble with the local guards which caused them to get into trouble with their own parents. During this time they started developing a conflicting philosophy with the second oldest of their siblings, their brother Elias. Elias saw the city as a blight upon the natural world and started pursuing more druidic pursuits.
Coming into their twenties, Vanessa’s rebellious streak gets stronger, as they hear that their sister Sofia has signed up with the guard. During one particularly rough night, for Sofia, Vanessa happens upon her sister trapped by a gang of goons - unbeknownst to Vanessa they were sent to cause a distraction while a Grinner made a hasty escape - and so Vanessa (as caring for their siblings as ever) rushes to their sister’s aid. Vanessa dealt with a couple of the goons fast enough to scare off the rest and so Sofia - begrudgingly - owes Vanessa big time.   A couple more years passed relatively uneventfully, as Vanessa started to focus on helping people. Helping people gave her a purpose she had been lacking for nearly a decade, and she soon started to see the knock on effects of her aid. With a slow realisation that a city is as much an ecosystem as a forest, or an ocean, or a plain, Vanessa started to come around to an altered view of Elias’ philosophy. Instead of seeing the City as a blight, Vanessa sees the City as a gestalt organism existing in concert with the natural world and that the best way to heal one is to heal the other. The only way to heal Cities and communities of people is to ensure all have a good standard of living as when people live well they can live in tune with the natural world on a much larger scale.   With this realisation, Vanessa started learning to channel Druidic powers, and settled into her role as a carer of the common folk and the streets. Doing so drew the attention of a Grinner as, being an ever attentive listener, they learned many secrets and rumours that only the commoners could learn who was compassionate and kind. Vanessa took to this role like a duck to water, spreading ideas of revolution among the workers and those who came to their food pitches on the streets of Port Damali. Occasionally running tasks beyond just spreading the word. On one such excursion to Tussoa on a particularly juicy rumour. The Marquis of Tussoa’s favourite necklace was being repaired and thus open to being stolen - to send a message as much as anything. Vanessa wasn’t the only one to think this and she bumped into the other Grinner that was targeting this necklace, Arianwyn Torcaryn a Pallid Elf. The serendipity of running into another of their beliefs was revealed when they both closed in on the shop containing the necklace. The shop was alarmed, which alerted the nearby guards, and in the chaos the shopkeeper was killed. Acting quickly Vanessa grabbed some of the goods in the shop and both women ran before the guards arrived moments later. Feeling they’d failed spectacularly; Arianwyn and Vanessa promised to not reveal what had happened to anyone else. After these events the two women kept in loose contact, passing hidden messages to each other as they both improved.   The next few years were busier, but nothing stood out until - during their 24th year - a merchant man made numerous advances towards them which were all politely rebuffed until one particularly drunken attempt at wooing Vanessa which was rebuffed much more physically. Immediately knowing to go to ground, rich men don’t tend to like having their noses broken, Vanessa reached out to her Grinner contacts looking for an escape. Opting to be punished in absentia, they were sentenced to Exile for the grievous assault of a nobleman. So Célestine was born, Vanessa shed her former identity.   Fortunately, someone else was also looking for an escape - Roux Ellis, something of a lost lamb - who they checked before meeting, and both were swiftly onto the Stolen Steel, a floating illicit artistic commune. Once both of them were safely at sea, Célestine took to caring for the artisans quite smoothly, acting as a step between the crew and the Quartermaster. Thamior Suithrasas, a manipulative and exploitative noble-born high elf with little care for the individual members. Taking up masonry while surrounded by the artists, Célestine helped many members - but especially Roux who was now going by Fance.   After five years at sea, Célestine’s reputation for looking after the crew led to her hearing about the Captain and the Quartermaster's plan to sell the crew out to the Clovis Concord for a pretty penny and easy retirement. This angered Célestine and she floated the idea of Fance leading a mutiny, as they’re much more charismatic. Célestine and Fance were elected Quartermaster and Captain respectively. The crew forced the former leadership off the ship and chose to flee from the Clovis Concord. The Concord ship chased them around Wildemount, until the crew took a vote to risk it all by heading into the Cauldron Sea…

Célestine is an urban druid, who sees nature and civilisation as two parts of a whole system and that the health of each half relies on the health of the other.
