Personal history

Grew up in Gwardan, a childhood of climbing trees, running goods and messages for communal elders amongst the guilds, and causing honest mischief for the merchants throughout the Korrwa Ring. Parents split when he was just a toddler, his mother (Saphielle) leaving the city with his sister (Calarelle) for a fresh start. He was young when magic began to bloom, things would be agreeable in a most unusual way, objects moving from some greater reach, a fondness for the winter and an unnatural draw to rivers and lakes.   Maturing into an adult he started to grow a reputation, bar room brawls leaving people burned with calls of foul play, an unnatural sturdiness followed him which mostly fed into the reputation of a weird ruffian. But still he worked, kept his nose clean apart from some mishaps others started.   Father (Kerrym) left when Garryn was almost black out drunk celebrating a friend's promotion, his parting words (as best as can be remembered) “Your life is going to be great, I leave all that to you, the chance to live it. You can find me if you need the help, but your old man isn’t fit for these walls anymore. Good luck”. The hangover wasn’t as bad as the sudden realization that he was left alone.   Hard labour pays well, when it pays. He had a house to himself, plenty of gold left behind by a fleeing father, enough to start a decent life. If it weren’t so boring. Abandonment issues and want to rebel with noone to rebel against lead to some run-ins with the law, some kinship with other loners of Gwardan as a makeshift family, looking out for one-another, especially when one does something they shouldn’t.   When the first word most think of alongside your face is ‘miscreant’ it can be hard to find friends or lovers, but it wasn’t impossible. Garryn's partner (Elisen Umeralei, they/them afab Wood Elf) was a hard worker with a great reputation, the worst thing they were known for was spending time with Garryn, offering coin and a warm bed when it’s needed, and damn they were a good kisser. The problem with Elves is expectation; When a relationship can last more than a century and your family expects it to, the pressure to do it with the right person can be crippling, especially in such a tight knit community. It wasn’t meant to be, they agreed about that.   Another friend (Ailas Bisalor, he/him amab Wood Elf) lead to competition in petty crime, a game of one-upmanship till he ratted Garryn out on a bigger score, they didn’t talk much after that. In and out of barred rooms, loans into debts to be forgotten or dug up like blackmail necromancy. Eventually you run out of good graces in your home town and you have to move on.   The house sold, most of his belongings too, and he ventured out to Port Damali. Word was that’s the way Dad went and gods knew he could use some help now. He bought a little place with almost everything he had, landed in some warehouse work and started spreading word of wanting something better, making friends with the local street folk and loners, even inviting a new friend (Paxton, They/She amab Human) to live together and keep the bed warm. When a ship’s captain (Captain Klalris "Chomper" Wrarith, they/them afab Ravenite Dragonborn) saw Garryn's face and remarked how alike he was to another who came through and was dropped off at Darktow, it was like fate aligned. The key was left with his friend with a request of “Try not to move out, I might be back some time, but make yourself at home” and Garryn left to the high seas, a life of piracy unfolding ahead of him, a world of freedom to develop strange gifts and set the heart on what you want in life.   Garryn moved from crew to crew in the year since, falling in on ship The Bright Omen and frequently punished for not doing as Captain Kaggard demanded. When the crew had a run-in with Paij, Garryn was thrown overboard to distract her for their get away. It worked and he now finds himself as crew upon The Ill Hand.

Contacts & Relations

Gwardan friendship circle   Elisen Umeralei, They/Them afab Wood Elf, partner; Hard worker, reputable carpenter, struggles with wanting to see the world and familial pressure to continue tradition and making the family proud.   Ailas Bisalor, He/Him amab Wood Elf, frienemy; Manipulative egotist, will twist and control those around him to get what he wants, useful to have in your corner but it's hard to tell if he is.   Baldithas Willowsmile, He/They amab Wood Elf, work buddy; Labrador in Elf form lumberjack, too nice a himbo who's wrapped around Ailas's finger, always has a silver to offer a friend, most likely to get the first round of drinks.   Ninyddy Blinkfaun, She/Her afab Forest Gnome, work buddy; Mischievous lumberjack, devious plan maker, keeps Ailas in line when she can help it, most likely to instigate a bar fight through words alone.     Port Damali friendship circle Paxton, They/She amab Human, partner; Once homeless busker, bard in the making with possible ties to Grinners, quiet but friendly. Helped Garryn find his way on arriving to Port Damali, kept him safe for a few days on the streets before he found a place he could afford, agreed to move in with him as they bonded over being abandoned by family despite doing their best but not being perfect. Was left the (albeit small) house and what wealth Garryn had left when he left.   Max Donley, They/Them afab Human, street survivor; Homeless, connections to the criminals of Port Damali, helped Garryn get work, occasionally crashes at Garryn and Paxton's place no questions asked in repayment, causes problems on purpose, usually in a fun way.   Jo, He/She/They fluid androgynous ace mystery, work buddy; Dockworking hard labourer, generally pleasant and helpful if it doesn't cost them anything, helped Garryn get in contact with pirates in exchange for Garryn giving up a work day so Jo could get more hours in. Unusually connected but clean, possible ties to Myriad or Grinners.   Captain Klalris "Chomper" Wrarith, They/Them afab green Ravenite Dragonborn, pirate captain; One of a few captains Garryn talked to thanks to Jo, recognized him through association with his father Kerrym, taught Garryn how to work on a ship and got him connected to The Revelry to some day gain enough pull to start asking questions at Darktow. In the Revelry's 'factions', Chomper and their crew of The Platinum Parley are mostly neutral, making small waves in the grand scheme of things, acting as an intermediary trader of goods from the Menagerie Coast to ships of the Revelry. Their lack of any violent history and the coin they bring to the port towns gives them enough leeway to not often be hounded by the Clovis Concord, so long as they're quick and what business they do have is quiet.     Antagonistic Pirates Captain Kaggard Nahlemoth, She/They afab Triton, pirate captain; Merciless and aggressive, took Garryn on a raid of a trade ship and had him locked up when he refused to kill. Her ship, The Bright Omen, is vaguely designed after an angler fish with a sharp toothed figurehead rising up to two jibs at the bow of the ship, reinforced for ramming, with a hanging lantern at the front to light up their aggressive boarding tactic.

Family Ties

Kerrym Timberwing, He/They amab Wood Elf, father; Often distant parent to Garryn, hard working and making promises he shouldn't keep. Worked to the bone with a troublemaker son to look out for too, he couldn't take the stress any longer and chose his own wellbeing, deciding his son was an adult and didn't need him, he left to find his own way away from everything that reminded him of his downfalls and would ring out what passion he had left for the word he did (carpentry).   Saphielle Pathyra (previously Timberwing), She/Her afab High Elf, mother; Having moved to Gwardan in the interest learning steamcasting for profit, she fell for Kerrym for being one of the few who were welcoming to an outsider and they decided to settle and have a child together. Saphielle still dreamed of a better life, not in some log cabin raising children, but of learning and wealth. When she was denied the education she sought and wasn't supported in her dream by Kerryn, she threatened to take their children and leave him behind to go find what she wanted. They agreed to split their children in their separation and she left to move further into the Empire.   Calarelle Pathyra (previously Timberwing), She/Her amab High Elf, sister; Older sister (30-40 years old), trained in carpentry with an interest in rare materials and intricate designs to challenge her, left with her mother with hopes for higher education in enchantment or similar. Regrets leaving home and the possible chances she may have had with steamcasting, but believes in her mother's drive for a better life and the good that will come from it.
