Personal history

Rin was born into a slightly disreputable branch of a minor noble family in Port Damali. When she was 11(ish) A ship Rin was on (one of her family’s ships) was betrayed to pirates by her uncle. When they attacked the ship was driven into a cataclysmic storm. She survived with the help of a veteran who found her. When they made it back to her family, they hired the Veteran as a tutor. After the storm, Rin began to exhibit strange magical powers. Her parents put her into magical training with her cousin who grew jealous of Rin’s natural affinity and left to find their own teacher so that they could come back and eventually show Rin up. Her Mother, a spymaster for the local lord, constantly probes and tests her, trying to prepare Rin to follow in her mothers footsteps. Rin knows she means well, but feels stifled by her family's expectations and the responsibilities that come with them. What Rin really wishes she could do is join her uncle as a freewheeling pirate (she probably has romantic ideas of what this entails). For now, she puts up with her family and looks for the right opportunity to get away.

• Galleren Salir - Father Galleren is usually away, doing something vague for the family's merchant shipping business. Rin suspects this is a cover for spying on behalf of her mother, but it is equally likely that is just her imagination.
• Alexandra Salir - Mother Alexandra is spymaster for the local lord, a job she takes very seriously. She has spent most of Rin's life trying to train her for spycraft and intrigue, which Alexandra insists is not the same as sneaking out to the local tavern, though Rin isn't particularly interested in learning what the difference is exactly.
• Avaline - Cousin, Childhood Friend, Rival
• Captain Gaspar 'Storm Rider' Salir - Favorite Uncle, Pirate, Black Sheep
• Conrad Kajj - Tutor, Protector Conrad doesn't talk much about his past, other than the occasional, scarcely believable, anecdotes about how various techniques or pieces of knowledge saved his and his companions' lives during his 'adventuring days' which he uses to illustrate his lessons.

Headstrong scion of a wealthy family on the Menagerie Coast. Rin feels stifled by her parents and the responsibilities that come with her family name. Wishes she could join her black-sheep cousin as a free-wheeling pirate.
