Samael

Samael is the most mistrusted of the gods, as his domain is trickery and lies and the people with which he concerns himself occupy the lowest rungs of Imperial society. Samael watches over the unfortunate and oppressed, and he is prayed to by conmen and thieves as well as orphans and the destitute. His priests are tolerated by the rest of Imperial society, but barely in some cases, as they consider it their duty to puncture the egos of their fellow clerics and the great and wealthy men who rule the Empire whenever possible. Some serve as defenders of the prosecuted, in which role they frequently butt heads with Davos, the divine prosecutor. Others run orphanages and soup kitchens - occasionally working in secret with the Cult of Aurelius.

History

It is said that Samael was the only one of the original eight Imperial Gods to approach Kain himself, rather than the other way around. It's unknown what the two spoke about in that first meeting, though rumors swirl aplenty, and many believe that Samael lied and tricked himself into the Pantheon. Others say Kain was not so easily fooled, but rather saw the benefit of having a deity like Samael as part of his faith. Indeed, Samael has on many occasions used his talents to get the Empire or the other Gods out of trouble - sometimes even trouble he didn't cause.

Tenets of Faith

Samael's most fervent worshipers dedicate themselves to protecting those prosecuted and oppressed by society, tending to its most downtrodden members. They also consider it a tenant of their faith to remind the great and noble that they are as subject to misfortune and folly as any other man.
