Book III | Chapter I | Past Sins Report
General Summary
On the 1st of Raindraw, the party arrived in the ghost town of Hellford. Upon entering the deserted and destroyed streets, the party began witnessing supernatural phenomena throughout the city - phantom gun & cannon fire, reflections of long-dead individuals, and screams & wails - that deeply unsettled several party members. Through the use of some recently acquired spells, Jack Morning gave Cass the temporary ability to see changes in temperature through the Viper's Eyes spell, allowing Cass to see that they were surrounded by a large number of ghostly, cold orbs of bluish light.
As the party approached the center of Hellford, Cass noticed that a large number of the orbs were encircling Jack Morning in particular; Oliver Revilo noticed a similar phenomenon when he caught glimpse of Morning's reflection in a shattered window and saw a number of humanoid figures standing around him, staring at him. The party disagreed about what to do next, and split up; Cass, Verst & Tourmaline began escorting Morning out of town; Silas & Oliver approached the town hall at the beckoning of one of the ghostly reflections; and Cards took up a defensive position in the crumbling ruins of a townhouse.
Oliver and Silas went into the town hall and were greeted by the reflection of Cornelius Plunk, the former mayor of Hellford, who instructed them to turn on an old music box on a nearby table. As the music box began to play an off-tune, discordant rendition of a saloon-favorite, Plunk's voice began to travel through the music box and speak to Oliver and Silas. Plunk told Oliver and Silas that for whatever reason, the souls of the dead in Hellford had been unable to leave the city limits since their death 20 years ago, and he suspected it had something to do with the experiments of a group of shady figures that had taken up residence beneath the city. As Oliver and Silas conversed with Plunk, a rat entered the ruined town hall and quickly ran away after Plunk pointed it out. Plunk then explained that he wouldn't be able to speak much longer, but that if the party could help free him and his fellow citizens from their eternal imprisonment, he may consider forgiving Morning for his role in the destruction of Hellford.
