The Precursors
Ever since the first humanoids from Idraz set foot on the Faylen Continent, they've discovered an abundance of ancient ruins dotting the landscape. These ruins, varying in make, design, and function, seem to have housed a civilization of humanoids that archeologists believe disappeared approximately 2000 years ago. This extinct people are now referred to as the "precursors", and the mystery of their disappearance has baffled archeologists and historians for hundreds of years.
Precursor ruins follow a number of different design philosophies depending on the region of origin, which has lead archeologists to believe that the precursors were made up of a number of different distinct cultural groups. The precursor ruins of Chapel Valley seem to be made up of two different cultural groups - the precursors of the Upper Valley and the precursors of the Lower Valley.
The Upper Valley precursors seemed to have been a simple agrarian people. Many of their buildings and settlements were made of wood, making the discovery and uncovering of these ruins difficult. Historians have theorized that the precursors of the Upper Valley served as a sort of "tributary people" to the much larger precursor civilization of the Lower Valley. The most easily discovered ruins of the Upper Valley are made of stone, but those are few and far between. The most well known example of these ruins is the Grove Tower in the city of Deadplains.
The precursor ruins of the Lower Valley seem to have been the seat of an empire. The ruins that have been discovered amid the Outcast Peaks and within the Great Dune Sea are made of expertly crafted stone. The ruins of the Lower Valley also include The Chapel, the strange temple built atop the Outcast Peaks.
