Avian

Basic Information

Anatomy

Mostly humanoid, with more bird like legs and grasping/perching talons, wings that change with ethnicity, hollow bones, and a feather tail. They naturally grow short fluffy feathers on their head, around their eyes, chest, legs, and around their wings, they will not grow out naturally but can grow to be much longer, resembling tail feathers, if Lumin is used. They can puff out these feathers to keep warm or appear bigger.

Growth Rate & Stages

Age of death is around 300 years. Full maturity is reached at the age of 48, most growing is done by the early thirties. An Avian can fly by the time they're 10-18, but their wings will not be fully grown until their late thirties. Culturally an Avian is considered an adult when they turn 24.

Ecology and Habitats

The ideal habitat for Avians are the floating isles. Their dark skin and wings make living on the Isles relatively easy for them. After the Inmenastian invasion many Avians were forced to adapt to ground living. These Avians could no longer live on the Isles.

Biological Cycle

Avians are naturally migratory creatures (with some ethnic exceptions) though many resist the urge based on living in mixed cultures where it is frowned upon, or due to homesickness upon departure.

Behaviour

Avians will preen their own and loved ones feathers. Traditionally this is done with the fingernails or wing talons, however modern Avians make special combs shaped like beaks out of wood, bone, or even the beaks of dead birds to give as gifts, used when feathers are particularly dirty, or when preparing for special occasions.

Additional Information

Facial characteristics

Yellow, orange, and rarely grey eyes with short fluffy feathers growing on the sides. Short flight like feathers grow around their ears for decoration.

Geographic Origin and Distribution

Most of the Avians still live on the smaller floating isles but the ones who were driven from Inmenastia and Drena live in small diverse communities on the ground. They are spread mostly across Corycinth and Myrie

Perception and Sensory Capabilities

Avien's have very strong eye sight, but poor hearing among Tempratians. The feathers on their visible ears are purely decorative. Some avians have the ability to echo locate, though this is rather rare.

Common Customs, Traditions and Rituals

Aviens will grow out a few feathers with lumin and braid their loved ones flight feathers in with their own. Land dwelling Aviens will grow large trees with houses made of the branches as a family ritual when a new house has to be made. They are called "family trees", "landing trees", or "living homes" Families and friends will come together, usually after the first or last meal of the day, to preen each others feathers. Some Aviens have beaks to preen with, but many will use their fingers or carved wood or bone tools shaped like beaks.

History

Ten thousand years ago early Luxorns colonized some of the major isles, Inmenastia and Drena being the main ones, driving many Aviens from their home. The deities did not wish to interfere too much, but did help along both species to adapting to their new environments.
