Rennfreid

City of Salt

Rennfreid is the primary port of entry to the continent of Alteria, and the primary nexus of Aurelian international trade.

Early settlers to the region were intermarried tribes of humans that operated as a loose society, harvesting the ocean and timber in cooperation with one another. Over time, the most prominent tribe (and namesake of the metropolis) consolidated power with their close allies and formed a single, unified city on the beaches of the ocean. The remains of this proto-settlement, called simply the Old City, survive in the massive and still operational drydocks.

In addition to its more visible trade practices, Rennfreid is also the home base for the Dark Lanterns.

Demographics

The metropolis contains a settled assortment of Aurelia seafarers, as well as traveling dignitaries and traders from the Ionian Republic and Ilith. Dragonborn are also infrequent visitors on the odd occasion that they're spotted outside of Zera.

The multicultural nature of the city lends itself to a somewhat more progressive peasantry, in general. This is encouraged by the small community of noble merchant houses, who view conservatism as a hindrance to profit. The Baron also actively encourages a more liberal understanding of the teachings of Ferros the Architect, and the Basilica in this region is more lax than further inland or north.

Government

Baron Severn exerts an uncharacteristically public presence within Rennfreid, overseeing much of the city's day-to-day operations personally. He is frequently seen mingling with the city's nobility - always accompanied by a few visible bodyguards, and many more out of sight.

When tasks must be delegated, they are dispensed to Regional Magistrate Lugh Suncrest and the small team of scribes beneath him.

Defences

Aurelia's fleet operates exclusively out of Rennfreid, making the settlement almost unassailable by sea. About half of it is moored at any time in the surrounding bay. The remainder patrols the coastline, from Ilith to Aurum, and escorts trade ships heading to and from the mainland. While the Aurelian fleet is small compared to the Ionian armada, its efficiency is well renowned.

A robust town guard, paid privately by the Baron, handles minor security issues. They're supported, and sometimes commanded by the Dark Lanterns. In order to further secure the shipyards, a healthy garrison of Legionaries also resides in the town.
