Top Elven Compliments

that are actually insults!

Have you been working with an elf recently? Did he compliment you? Yes? How nice of him! They're such grateful individuals, aren't they?   Except when they're not, of course. Have you ever doubted his intentions? Maybe that double-tongued treehugger might as well have secretly insulted you! But how can you tell? Don't speculate no more, because the Rocksdeep Tribune has you covered in this weeks feature:

Top 3 Elven Compliments Which Are Actually Insults!

Your Beard Reaches the Ground!

èméar Kíyarr Ríyaíd í Préamar!

How nice of him to notice the effort it took you to grow such a respectable beard, isn't it? Think twice! You as a dwarf may be very fond of your facial hair and see it as evidence of your dwarven pride, but the elven culture sees beards in a slightly different light! Your so-called friend actually said this to both mock your short height and complain about your allegedly missing hygiene! Next time he says this, make sure to call him bald face (Anta'Ufine), he'll appreciate it!

Go to a Tavern and Enjoy Your Ale!

pé é ya yarírm yamar íméèm èméar yarí!

Just like a true dwarven friend, your elven fried sad goodbye by wishing you joyful after-work hours with a fresh cup of ale at the towns best tavern. Have you ever wondered why he never joins you there? It's because he doesn't mean it! In fact, he thinks you're a drunkard and tells you to sod off. But you can simply be a nice guy and invite him to the mine to find his first diamond (Hir-Inga'Miril).

Stone Head

démí íyar

Ahhh, the oldest of dwarven compliments! A mind so enduring, one would easier break a stone than your will. Surely, he must mean this one! Wrong! That elven grassmind (Car'Linqe) just called you stubborn and inflexible. Elves have used that phrase as an insult as long as we've used it to compliment each other. Don't make that mistake again!

Elven Insults

Kíyarr Ríyaíd í Préamar
(Beard Reaches the Ground)
You're short and unhygienic!
Pé É Ya Yarírm
(Go to a Tavern)
Go away, you're not helping anyway
Démí íyar
(Stone Head)
stubborn and inflexible

Dwarven Insults

Anta'Ufine
Grow yourself a respectable beard, you look as weak as a baby
Hir-Inga'Miril
a few bricks shy of a load
Car'Linqe
Your will is as easily trampled as grass. You're weak-minded.

This was a fun little article to read. Do you have plans to expand into a larger language article?

Jul 24, 2018 06:00

I don't plan to in the near future. I use this world mainly for my RPG and actually "speaking" that language is something that will never happen. I might write one on how to "translate" to them, but that article might end up private.

I like the dwarven ones more...personal preference though. ;)

Hehe. My personal favourite is "Go find your first diamond!"

I loved it! Funny and entertaining, and it still manages to teach us more about your world and its cultures. I'll try my best to produce articles of such quality, but I'm unsure I'll manage! How did you come up with the dwarven and elven sentences?

Jul 24, 2018 20:30

Thanks, glad you liked it! I'm sure you'll manage for your world.
The Dwarven is actually just wrong Sindarin (oh the irony). For other languages I use this generator (always with the same setting of course): Language Generator

Thanks for sharing your ressources! Looking forward to use it.

Very. Nice use of both languages to show the way these cultures interact! Absolutely hilarious writing style too!

Exactly what I was going for. Thanks!
