S1 E17: Ophelia's Repo Job
General Summary
In which the gang defeats the last of the Pagan Gnolls, and gets back Ophelia's stuff.
- We started with a new visitor down the tunnel from the Yuan Ti Shrine: A goblin prisoner escapee named Dwiz.
- Ungodly piles of loot and goodies including sacred/profane statuary, gens, gold and piles of electrum coins.
- A brief skirmish with Gnolls breaking into the room from deeper in the Gnoll lair, and once they were put down, the door was soundly locked and watches were taken, so that everyone could get a long rest. Afterwards, traps were found and disarmed in the hallway; crude, but showing that the Gnolls had decided against a direct assault and hoped to instead soften them up on the way to their main area.
- Along the way, encountered two unarmed Gnolls placing empty barrels into their storage area. What to do - surely these two would alert the others to their whereabouts? They offered to lock themselves into the barrels, but the gang wisely observed they could get right back out again and run down the opposite hall to alert more guards. While discussions about the most humane way to eliminate the threat ensued among the others, Xi Shi simply killed them both - with ease, as they were unarmed noncombatants. Some might not have liked the outcome, but undeniably those Gnolls would have murdered all of them if the roles were reversed, and would have betrayed them to the guards if left to escape.
- The gang then took on the main force of Gnolls, including a large female Gnoll chieftain in full, if terribly inaccurate and gaudy, yuan-ti ceremonial dress complete with false beard and Uraeus-crested crown. This fight was better coordinated and spread out further, pinning down the chieftain and eliminating their advantage from numbers.
- The Chieftain went down swinging, as did her gnoll captains, fighting desperately but ultimately unsuccessfully. a backup force of flying snakes that might have created significant problems with rampage features were rendered mostly irrelevant by Xi Shi charming them into inaction. Rongo and Blizzard smashed into the Gnoll retinue and Lorfel's divination magics and timely Silvery Barbs ensured that the enemy couldn't catch its breath. Mae and Dwiz helped pin down and separate the gnolls to ensure the gang's victory - leaving them absolutely swimming in treasure. But they also know that Ophelia wants at least some of it back.
- They ended with the knowledge that there may still be a few Gnolls elsewhere in the complex - likely in the entry area on guard, the one place the gang hasn't been because they snuck into the ceremonial room first, rather than coming in the usual way through the front door.
