The Caves of Chaos

Nestled into a steep dead-ended canyon north of the High Trade Road in the Borderland Marches, the so-called Caves of Chaos are made up of ten or so individual cave mouths leading into cavern complexes, some of only a few small chambers and others likely extending for miles underground. Despite the unsavory name, the place is something of an attraction for adventurer-tourists who come looking for wealth and plunder; most are able to scare up a few coins from goblins who don't want more trouble, but a few are never heard from again, which only adds to the appeal for would-be tomb-robbers.   A few rumors seem to persist about the place:
  1. All the caves are connected together at at least one point, though some are connected only by hidden passageways.
  2. Tribes of different creatures live in different caves.
  3. At least two clans of goblins live there, and one is aggressive, while the other is at least neutral.
  4. Some kind of cult had an altar there, but it's been abandoned for years.
  5. There are ogres living there who can be helpful and reasonable.
  6. The caves on the canyon floor are pretty picked over, but also easier to get to and more or less safe.
  7. The caves higher up may require climbing gear but they have a much better chance of still having some monsters and treasure.
  8. One or more of the caves on the western canyon connect all the way back to Quindarin's undercroft.
  9. Orcs and other humanoids have learned to kidnap, rather than kill adventurers, and sell them for ransom.
  10. The Kobolds in the caves have seen a lot of action and learned a lot of tricks - watch out for flaming oil traps especially.
  11. Some have reported seeing white Kobolds; red is the norm.
  12. Orcs in the caves take heads as trophies.
