The Beggar's Dice

Sometimes also called (incorrectly) the Beggars' (plural) Dice, the gambling hall and casino is named after a singular individual who became famous a few generations ago when he rose from the rank of Squalus to Optimate on his divinely-granted luck with dice games; more properly it's named after his dice, which are sealed in clear glass in the middle of the casino floor with a plaque that tells the whole story. He rolled his winnings into converting this property, which was originally two hotels and a furniture emporium, into the rambling 4-story structure dominating this small section of Rue D'Olive in the Elven Quarter.   The Beggar's Dice is a relatively inexpensive choice for food, drink and lodging in the Elven Quarter because it is licensed to permit gambling while drinking, rather than needing to keep the two activities completely separate. As such, the gambling revenues offset the expenses so that one might get a mug of ale for 2c and a room for the night for 2s5c. The presence of a number of massive Minotaur bouncers keeps the 'riffraff' out. Squalus are not permitted in the Elven District at all, so riffraff here means cheap or low-class-acting Delabi.   From somewhat humble origins 40 years ago, the Beggar's Dice was sold by the original beggar himself after a series of expansions and upgrades proved to be too expensive for the owner to pay down in short order as promised; a physically unpleasant but mentally astute Optimate human named Cochon snagged the building before it could go into arrears. His success has been based on hiring good people to run things - not just the gaming tables, but the accounting and promotions - and while he is often seen at the gambling hall, he tries not to involve himself overmuch in its daily operations.
