Thele
Each column acts as its own sort of mercenary outfit, and are often hired piecemeal or totality to serve as armed guard or soldiers for other nations. Unlike more traditional mercenary outfits, senior commanders are much more prudent with tributes, and work to distribute them throughout the whole of society, not just the soldiers. In turn, they are more reliable than traditional mercenaries, and thus are able to command better salaries.
Thele is a military junta, composed of seven military branches who elect senior officers and advisors from their ranks to rule the country. Each column within Thele retains control over a region of territory, and are allowed some measure independence in administration. However, most major decrees and expenditures are determined by the ‘committee’ as a group. Every year, for example, each column reserves a portion of its tributes and surplus to give to the committee, which then redistribute it equally amongst each column, in order to prevent any major power inbalances, and to secure loyalty from the base population.
Over the last few centuries, the entirety of the populace has been consumed by the military hierarchy, assigning a military rank and chain of command for every citizen. Life for the average Thelen citizen is stable and disciplined, but precarious, whether they are involved in battle or not. Many auxiliary citizens still provide for the basic necessities of the armies, and look to senior commanders to secure contracts and tributes to provide for its people.
History
Once, long ago, Thele was the cultural heart of the empire. When the pargothi city-state of Thele burned their ancestral home of Tev-Ra and marched on Anaes, they meant not to return. They overthrew the assembly, and forged the republic, which would become the empire. For many outside Turath, the idea of military excellence and conquest was considered intrinsic to all of its imperial citizens. Yet, over the generations, the High Warlocks corrupted this image to suit their own purposes, eroding the integrity felt by many of the common soliders. Scholars debate the exact cause of the empire’s fall, but surely one of its principle precursors was the loss of loyalty of the army, or at least a portion of its most senior ranks. As the provinces began to declare their own soverignty, many of the legions broke off to join them, if not for shared values, then for self-preservation. However, a significant portion of the Turathi Legions had always been wary of an empire’s weakening, and feared conquest by the Orgol. For many senior commanders, it was Turathi discipline that held the Orgol at bay, and without it, the continent was vulnerable. A faction within the legions grew from this concern, and a portion of the entire army separated from the empire to encamp themselves on the northern border. Determined to defend the continent from the orgol, in the hopes that the conflict would subside, the would eventually become the Columns of Thele. They refused to declare a singular ruler, considering themselves regents, though in the generations since it is more about the balance of power.Columns
