Selene
Selenese territory is rife with divine history. Considered to be the cradle of post-sundering civilization, the region is thought to be the birthplace of the first Pargothi settlements, as former tribesman left the sanctuary of the Pentasis Mountains, and branched out into the southern continent. Other ruins and landmarks tell tales of scions of the old gods, Eldari mystics, and Muscovan saints all having travelled through this territory over the millennia.
As such, many of the inhabitants of Selene are devout worshipers of one god or another. Officially, Selene is governed by an ecclesiastical priesthood who serve as a neutral arbiter and sovereign for the realm. Known as the Church of the Inheritor, this priesthood functions as the head of state, granting lordship to community leaders they approve of, and facilitating the management of mutual defense, trade, and welfare to the kingdom as a whole. While the Church is firmly built upon the foundations of the Paragons pantheon, their acolytes and followers tend to be more accepting of older faiths and their adherents, provided to obey the laws governing the land.
In the more recent decades, the Church has started to extend its reach and influence beyond its borders, seeking to convert new followers abroad. While the exact goal of the Church remains unknown, the influx of tithes and information in exchange for alms, prayers, and minor miracles has not gone unnoticed by many of Selene's rivals. For them, the Church and its people are viewed with mixed parts suspicion and awe, depending on one's current lot in life.
Selene is the oldest Turathi kingdom in Southern Kreata, having declared independence less than a century after the Fall of Regnum. Since that time, Selene has garnered a reputation as a refuge for rebels, heretics, and revolutionaries. For a time, Selene was the nexus of a powerful coalition between Muscova, Thvisch, and several Orgol tribes, and presented a united front against any threat that would seek to subjugate them. Centuries later, the words of these agreements have faded, their oaths remaining untested.
History
After the destruction of Regnum, Selene was the first native territory to break away from the turathi empire, and remains the oldest post-empire kingdom in the continent. With the provinces of Euremyer and Alkandara engaged in disputes that would eventually lead to civil war, Selene was able to secure alliances with Muscova and Thvisch rebels to create a force capable of holding off the Imperial legions. Known as the Inheritors, this coalition army was a combination of Thviscan freehoders, Muscovan Kosgots, and even a few sympathetic orgol tribes, not counting the scores of Imperial legion rebels and irregulars.
However, the Selenese rebellion was, by most accounts, a bloodless revolution. Despite a few skirmishes between vanguards of the Inheritors and the Legions, the great clash that was anticipated for a generation failed to manifest. Edrissa, the capital of present day Selene, is still rife with monuments to barricades and fortifications for a great battle that never came to pass. While many consider that the true reason for this failure of Imperial initiative was due to the corruption infested in the vestiges of Imperial bureaucracy, you’ll find few Selense who agree with you.
For the Selenese faithful and pioneers that laid the groundwork for rebellion, the abdication of the Imperial Dictum by the Exarch in was a sign of the gods’s graces, and a testament to their devotion.
