Washes Feast

Written for Prompt 21 (2019 Summer Camp)

Written by David_Ulph

Washes Feast is an important cultural tradition that unites the Dagor Human peoples who, despite coming from southern Dagorland, spread across the entirety of Elgerlia as well as spreading into the southern continent Sanaros as they made up high numbers of the mercantile class.

Tradition

This culinary tradition depicts the Dagor's cultural importance for family, where if the family does not live in the same building or road, they come together for a feast. The contents of the feast consists of roasted meat, roast potato, and accompaniments such as Dripping Pudding, stuffing, vegetables and gravy. Other vegetables such as cauliflower often in the form of cauliflower cheese, roast parsnips, peas, carrots, and broccoli, can be part of the feast. The leftovers of such a feast will be rationed for meals every day until the next Washesday.

Timing

It is customary that on the last day of the week, Kadasday (or Washesday), a household sit together to have a roasted meal with the best food they could scrape together. This is known as a Washes Feast. If the last day of the month occurs on the last day of the week, this extends to a family gathering where each member should chip in for the meal. This is known as Washes Banquet.

History

The origins of Washes Feast is a political one, harking back to the very end of the Golden King's rule over Elgerlia, when he was finally caught and executed on Krathnar in the Faar Isles. While it was most likely revolting Losalfar Conclaves that fought back the Golden King's armies and executed the despot, the Dagor peoples who supported the uprising from across the continent believe it was their Chieftain under the family name Dragorlan who was the executioner that day. That it was this Dragorlan that hung the tortured body to death from a tree outside the palace of Agavortaius.

Before the dying Golden King was put out of his misery however, the now free peoples that had stormed Agavortaius celebrated with a massive banquet feast that took up every street within the outer walls. And this day is believed to be by many Scholars to be a Kadasday and Kadasday is now referred to as Washesday after the Order of Saint Vortarius won the Great Schism and became dominant religion over the Dagor.

Since this folklore of the Dragorlan hanging the Golden King became popular, the celebration of Washes Feast has continued on and the proclaimed legitimacy for the Dragorlan heir to inherit the lands once under the harsh domain of Vortigern of Sadaprax which has since been realised in the Great Western Empire.
