Pepper is the flowering vine plant whose fruit is usually dried and used as spices and seasoning. It's one of the most common spices added in many cuisines around the South Estisia.

Basic Information

Anatomy

by Adcheryl
The pepper plant is a vine growing up to 4 m in height on supporting trees or any man-made structures. It can be grown in soil that is neither too dry nor too wet. When fresh and fully mature, the fruit is about 5 mm in diameter and dark red. A single stem bears 20 to 30 fruiting spikes.

It took about 2-3 full years to be ready for harvesting, with typical lifespan of 12-20 years per vine.

Geographic Distribution

Pepper is native to the northwest South Estisia around the tropical area known as the Jungle of the Myst. It's first cultivated by Durin people near the border of the jungle.

The taste of this spice led to trade routes established from there, making it accessible to the rest of the region. Nowaday it can be found commonly in plantations across midland civilizations, with plenty of varieties.

Additional Information

Uses, Products & Exploitation

Almost every part of a plant can be used as medicine, which can cure several illness like constipation, insomnia, and epilepsy. However, the most common uses is seasoning, from enhancing the flavour to food preservation.

In Food

It can be used in fresh or dried peppercorns in the cooking process, giving the spiciness and strong scent that make your tongue tingle and wanting to eat more.

Even the meal is finished, the grounded pepper in a small bowl are usually served alongside them, to be sprinkled by hand.

Special Punishment

Sometimes, the same thing that make you satisfied, make you suffer.

Peppers have been used in specific punishment that widely used in Durin, Krin and Valonian culture. By crushing fresh peppercorns of the spiciest and put it into their eyes, mouth, or possibly fresh wounds, it do not kill but causes them to cry in agony.

This method is very useful for interrogating captured spies in order to reveal their secret.

The Exotic, Common Taste

For midlanders, it can simply be found in the market. For the southerners however, it cost as much as gold.

Since the geographic difference making the pepper unable to grow in such region, it become one of the main exports of the Valonia Empire to their friendly alliance, Irgia Republic, with refined irons as the exchange.

Both resources have strategic value to each other, as to be seen in the immediate response of Irgian's iron cut due to the scandal in 25 VE. The empire as well cut off the spice trade route, causing the conflict to cool down.

Despite slow growth rate, it had been bred into various type for different purpose. Some are less spicy with stronger scent. Some are as hot as chili pepper—or even worse.

One of them is Pepperfruit. While ordinary plant are small and have multiple drupes, the pepperfruit has only a single drupe. With the size of a peach it may not be considered as peppercorn anymore. Using the simillar drying technique, it can produce powder as much as 20 pepper spikes.

Sometime people can get confuse by the ripe fruit's dark red color, thinking it's an ordinary fruit. This result in a painful tongue embedded into their long-term memory.

Nice article. I love your drawings! They look l lovely and you've used them in a great way to illustrate what you're saying and to make your article looks nice.   Some notes I took while reading:   "which its fruit is usually dried and used as spices and seasoning." You should say "whose" rather than "which its"   " It can be grown in soil that neither too dry nor too wet" you have a "is" missing after "that" " For the southern however, it's cost as a gold." Should be "it cost as much as gold"   In the tooltip in "scandal" I'm not sure what you mean in the second half of the sentence.   "They as well cut the spice trade route, causing it to cool down." Do you mean that cutting the trade route caused the conflict to cool down? Right now it reads as the trade route being the one cooling down.   " Pepper is essentially used for punishment that wiswly used in Durin" I'm not sure what you mean by "wiswly". If it's not a typo a tooltip would be useful here.   " it do not kill them but to cry in agony." Should be "but causes them to cry in agony"   I would out the geographical distribution higher on the page, since you introduce the trade route here so it should be before the "the exotic section".   The article is good as it is, nice and short, but if you want to add something you can add quotes to show cooking recipes and recipes for making the torture poison.

Thank you! :D Your feedback help me a lot especially the grammar which I'm not good at.   For what you doubt, It's that the republic want to know how Valonian had the strongest army in the world, so they could become like them as well. They denied the scandal when the plan failed, which then led to the mutual trades cut.

Hello! That's a nice article. Your drawings as well as your simple CSS style really tie the article together as a scientific document, or, well, a parchment roll. I like that you mentioned the fact that pepper can both be used as a tasty spice and in a much less humane well.   I have a comment regarding grammar: some parts of the article are written in past tense, while other are in the present: you may want to harmonize that a bit. I also noticed a few other mistakes/omissions:

  • "Some are as hot as chili (or even worst->worse)";
  • -"people can get confuse by dark red color when it ripe"->The ripe fruit's dark red color causes people to sometime mistake it for an ordinary fruit. This results in ...   Then again, I'm not a native speaker so I wouldn't like to give too much advice.   As mentioned by AmélieIS, I don't think you really need to add much to that article. If you really feel like adding something, an example of a recipe or a small quote about the harvesting season could be an option, but it is not absolutely necessary. Well done!

Nice read. I like the drawings you provided and the general layout of the article is nice as well. Each of the sections were short but to the point and seemed well tought out. One thing that could be added though is how it is used as medicine since you mentioned that it can be used for that. In the middle paragraph of the punishment section the sentence seems a bit strange so that could be improved perhaps. In all nice read!
