Aldatúrë

Aldatúrë - the primary form of construction throughout the Greenwood - is a school of carpentry that is based on using entirely living materials to create living, working, and communal spaces.

History

Aldatúrë has been in use by the Wood Elves of Dendralis since Time Immemorial. The exact date of this form of carpentry being put to use is unknown and considered to have existed for as long as the Elderwood and the Aéldelin society were to have existed as one. Since its initial discovery, the practice has not seen any major evolution in its techniques, with virtually all advances coming on the side of aesthetics. In its modern form, Aldatúrë has seen a rise in the complexity of vine weaves used in walls, allowing builders a wide range of expressions available for their work.

Access

While Aldatúrë is the primary form of construction throughout the Greenwood, it is not easily accessible to the average person. Requiring a deep connection to the trees and plants of the forest, becoming a master of the craft requires training for over a decade to learn not just the techniques, but to develop the proper relationship to the land. While the master builders are readily available to all citizens of the Greenwood Culture, the practice is a well-kept secret among the builders guild, in order to maintain balance within the Greenwood.

Camoflague

While Aldatúrë is a marvel simply for its use of exclusively living resources, its larger impact has been its natural camouflage, and the safety that has provided to wood elves for millennia. The key to proper Aldatúrë design it that it appears invisible to anyone on the forest floor. The outermost components will be guided to appear uniform with the nearby foliages, making recognition of these spaces virtually impossible for the untrained eye. With this natural camouflage, settlements are able to hide in plain sight from any threats, which has led to countless lives saved over time, particularly during the era of Orcish raiding parties in the early First Era. That Aldatúrë was passed down from the Aéldelinian culture to the Greenwood Culture might be sole reason that Aéldelin traditions remain in existence today.
