The Greenwood

The Greenwood is a massive subtropical/temperate broadleaf forest stretching north from the Emerald Shores. It features dense canopies, primarily with deciduous trees twice the size of comparable species in other forests. The underbrush is extremely diverse, with clusters of different flora and fungi in different regions. Certain species cluster into groves throughout the Greenwood, including the Welton Tree and Eldertree groves. The region is rich in flora, fauna, and fungi, making it one of the most naturally rich regions in the world.   Despite its natural marvels, the Greenwood is not a tourist-friendly destination due to its dense forest and thick underbrush. Most tourists do not venture far beyond the "gateways" of the Greenwood, accessible villages along the forest's edge. Hunting is the lone tourist attraction, with guides available for hire in gateway villages to lead hunting parties deep into the Greenwood. However, hunting parties are under strict regulation to ensure the forest's balance and sustainability.

Geography

The Greenwood boasts a relatively gently undulating topography, with occasional depressions like the Dale located east of Weltondale just outside the forest. Despite the varied topographic features, the forest maintains a uniform appearance across its expanse.   The Greenwood can be considered to have three regions:   Northern Region: This area features relatively gentle undulation in the terrain and is bordered by the Central Steppes to the north.
Southern Region: Known for sharp, karst-like hills created by rivers and streams carving out the valleys.
Eastern Region: Lying east of the Eldertide River's final leg, also featuring gentle terrain.   The primary water body within the Greenwood is the Eldertide River, which includes Breakwater Falls just north of its confluence with the Everflow River. This picturesque waterfall serves as a notable landmark and lends its name to the nearby village of Breakwater Falls. While other bodies of water, such as smaller tributaries and streams, exist within the Greenwood, their specifics remain shrouded in mystery. The Eldertide River is sourced far to the north in the mountains, while the Everflow River originates in the southern region of the Greenwood.   Accessibility within the Greenwood is limited. The Eastern Greenwood features only a single dirt path leading from Crescent City to Aleura, and another from Aleura to Breakwater Falls along the Eldertide River. The Southern Greenwood features more access points than the east, but these routes often do not continue past their first destination, resulting in the same issues of access in the east. The Northern Greenwood is only accessible via the Southern and Eastern Greenwood, or through the arid, unfriendly steppes to the north. Beyond these paths in the East and South, travel is hindered by dense vegetation and underbrush, with trails mainly utilized by citizens of the Greenwood, elves, half-elves, or experienced outdoorsmen and druids.   Views and scenery within the Greenwood are characterized by the prevalence of mature trees and relatively low underbrush. The forest canopy forms a grand cathedral-like ceiling, with towering trees stretching skyward and providing a sense of awe and majesty. Unique locations within the Eastern Greenwood include Weltondale, nestled within the grove of Welton Trees, and a gargantuan Eldertrees located east of Breakwater Falls. Additionally, a location midway between Aleura and Crescent City is renowned for its diverse fungi species.

Notable species include the Glimmering Butterfly, known for its iridescent wings, and the majestic Moonlit Owlbears, nocturnal predators that add to the forest's mystique. The Starlight Lilly and Welton Blossom attract numerous pollinators, ensuring the propagation of plant life.

Ecological Dynamics

The Greenwood's dense canopy, formed by towering trees, regulates temperature, humidity, and sunlight, creating a stable microclimate. This environment supports diverse habitats, from dense forests to water bodies, each fostering unique plant and animal communities. The interconnectedness of species through processes such as pollination, seed dispersal, and nutrient cycling highlights the forest's resilience and ecological balance.

Ecosystem Cycles

Nutrient cycling within the Greenwood involves processes such as decomposition, nutrient uptake by plants, and nutrient transfer through food chains and webs. These processes ensure the efficient recycling of nutrients and the sustainability of the ecosystem.   Seasonal changes in the Greenwood align with a humid subtropical climate. Summers are long, hot, and humid, with temperatures ranging from the upper 70s to upper 80s. Winters are short and mild, with temperatures rarely dropping below 50 degrees. The forest experiences abundant rainfall throughout the year, supporting its lush vegetation and diverse wildlife.   Migratory patterns also play a role in the ecosystem cycles of the Greenwood. During the winter months, sea birds from the south and mainland birds from the north migrate to the region, seeking refuge in the stable climate and abundant resources of the forest. These migratory birds contribute to the ecosystem by participating in activities such as seed dispersal and insect control.

Climate

The climate of the Greenwood is characterized by its humid subtropical nature, contributing to the forest's lush and verdant environment. Summers are long, hot, and humid, with daytime highs typically ranging from the upper 70s to upper 80s Fahrenheit. Winters are short and mild, with temperatures rarely dropping below 50 degrees Fahrenheit. This warm and humid climate supports the forest's dense vegetation and diverse ecosystem.   Seasonal changes within the Greenwood are more pronounced, with hot summers and mild winters. During summer, the forest experiences high humidity and abundant rainfall, supporting the continuous growth of its flora. In winter, while some trees may shed a portion of their leaves, this is quickly followed by budding, resulting in a continuous cycle of leaf renewal.   One of the most notable features of the Greenwood's climate is the constant mist that permeates the air. Generated by the dense vegetation and proximity to water bodies such as the Eldertide River, this mist contributes to the forest's high humidity levels and lush vegetation. While the mist may obscure distant views, it provides essential moisture for plant growth and supports a diverse array of flora and fauna.   The Greenwood receives moderate to high levels of precipitation throughout the year, ensuring ample moisture for its thriving ecosystem. Rainfall is typically distributed evenly across the seasons, sustaining the forest's rich biodiversity and contributing to its overall resilience. While the region generally enjoys stable weather conditions, occasional storms or disturbances may occur, particularly during the warmer months. These storms can bring heavy rainfall, gusty winds, and thunderstorms, though they are typically short-lived and followed by periods of calm.

Fauna & Flora

The Greenwood, with its expansive subtropical forest, harbors a rich tapestry of flora and fauna, creating a vibrant and intricate ecosystem. Dominating the landscape are the towering Welton trees, ancient giants that serve as vital hubs of life, providing habitat and sustenance for a diverse array of species. Amidst the dense undergrowth, vibrant bursts of electric-colored plants flourish, known for their medicinal properties and meticulously harvested by knowledgeable locals. At the heart of the Greenwood's ecosystem stand the Eldertrees, ancient sentinels of the forest that stabilize the soil, prevent erosion, and provide essential habitat for countless species.   In the shadows of the Eldertrees, apex predators such as the elusive Moonlit Owlbears prowl, their silent presence a testament to the delicate balance of nature within the Greenwood. As top predators, Moonlit Owlbears play a crucial role in regulating prey populations, preventing overpopulation and ensuring the health of the forest ecosystem. Fluttering through shafts of dappled sunlight, Glimmering Butterflies weave intricate patterns in the air as they pollinate the myriad plant species that call the Greenwood home. Alongside Silverscale Salmon, other aquatic species thrive, contributing to the dynamic and interconnected web of life that sustains the forest's ecosystem.   Nestled along riverbanks and nestled amidst the whispering leaves of ancient trees, Whispering Willows stand as silent sentinels, their drooping branches and rustling leaves a testament to the passage of time. These majestic trees provide essential habitat for nesting birds and shelter for small mammals, their deep root systems regulating water flow and preventing soil erosion along riverbanks. Within the embrace of the Whispering Willows, life flourishes, weaving intricate patterns of existence in harmony with the rhythms of the Greenwood.

However, the careful stewardship of these resources by the half-elven inhabitants ensures their preservation for future generations, maintaining the delicate balance of the forest ecosystem.

History

The Greenwood holds a rich and ancient history, stretching back to Time Immemorial, when it was a vast forest inhabited by pure elves. During this time, the Greenwood operated as a single massive organism, with its plants, animals, and native elves living in perfect harmony. The forest covered nearly half of the continent, serving as a vital source of oxygen and supporting a thriving ecosystem.   As the Mythic Era waned, the Greenwood began to shrink due to various factors, including wars that traumatized the forest and led to the eventual decline of many old-growth trees. Despite its shrinking size, the Greenwood remained resilient and vibrant, adapting to the changing world around it.   In the modern era, the Greenwood is primarily inhabited by half-elves, descendants of the original elven inhabitants. With the advent of sea travel and the establishment of settlements like Crescent City, the Greenwood has seen changes in its population and landscape. However, its citizens remain dedicated to preserving and protecting their forest home.   In addition to its rich history and vibrant ecosystem, the Greenwood is imbued with mystical energies. Whispers of nature spirits and the wisdom of the ancients echo through its ancient groves, adding to its allure and mystique. These magical elements contribute to the Greenwood's unique character and make it a place of wonder and reverence for its inhabitants.

Tourism

The Greenwood, renowned for its lush beauty, remains a realm largely untouched by the footprints of tourists. Its dense foliage and rugged terrain deter all but the most adventurous travelers, confining most visitors to the gateway villages situated along its periphery. Access to the heart of the forest is a challenge, with narrow trails and rugged terrain serving as the only pathways for those seeking entry into the Greenwood's realm.   Despite its formidable reputation, the Greenwood offers a singular attraction: hunting expeditions led by seasoned guides from the gateway villages. These guides, custodians of the forest's delicate balance, ensure that each hunting party treads lightly upon the forest floor. Visitors must adhere to strict regulations, declaring their quarry and observing quotas to prevent overexploitation of the forest's resources.   Unbeknownst to many hunters, their excursions are closely monitored by vigilant guardians hidden within the foliage. Tasked with safeguarding the forest's harmony, these silent sentinels intervene when necessary to maintain the delicate equilibrium of the Greenwood. Through their watchful eyes, the forest remains a sanctuary for both its inhabitants and its visitors, preserving its timeless allure for generations to come.
