War Turtle
A massive beast, the remnant of a lost era, a War Turtle can reach the size of an ox cart. Some wild specimens still exist in the Shimmering Sea, but today most of them are found in the pits of the Jeweled Cities where they are trained for war. Despite being mainly herbivores (though they can handle meat, so they are strictly speaking, omnivorous), these creature are dangerous. One of them can easily swallow a man if they were so inclined by their handlers. Some particularly cruel trainers and masters will feed the turtles slaves or the sick, so that they come to savor the taste of human flesh, which can drive them mad in battle.
War turtles are naturally quite slow, but they have several glands in their necks which, when overstimulated, make them frenzied for a short time. Their riders use these moments during battle to make the best of these creatures. In war, they are used to trample enemies and sometimes fitted with special rams, with which they are trained to hammer against walls and gates to smash them.
A war turtle of average dimensions usually carries a rider and two to four other soldiers, often a mix of archers and spearmen.
