The Raft

This amalgamation of wrecked vessels of varied makes and origins lies in the center of The Stingray Atoll, and now serves as the seat of power for the Admirals of Freeport.

Purpose / Function

Originally intended to be a temporary shelter while the original Admiralty Board worked out their differences, The Raft now stands as a monument to the cooperative spirit that the League of Free Sailors came to embody on the seas of Terrathria.

Alterations

There have been many improvements to the structural stability of the raft, anchoring it into the sand in the lagoon, as well as weatherproofing, reinforcement of the original structure, and replacing of rotted boards and sailcloth awnings.

Architecture

The architecture of The Raft is a jumbled mess of different styles of sailing ship from both Occidean and Oresian kingdoms. The original four pirate admirals were Chonsi, Ellenik, Rhonish, and Marajoan, and so the core architecture of The Raft represents the different shipbuilding traditions of these four kingdoms: though several wrecked Laozi junks make up the bulk of the material used for its construction, there are distinct accents of Ellenik trireme, a Marajoan barque, Chonsi panokseon and a wingship belonging to the elves of the Rhonian coast. As the League of Free Sailors has grown, characteristic pieces of other shipmaking traditions have been added, such as Qanuni bhagalahs, and even Freyggan and Motuan war-canoes.

Defenses

Situated in a natural cove protected by rock walls, The Raft is deemed the safest place that a pirate could find themselves. The outer ring of the Stingray Atoll also possesses watchtowers with naval cannons and mortars, and is futher surrounded by patrols of Free Captains who take shifts ensuring the pirate haven is not found by unfriendly eyes.

History

When several different pirate captains found themselves attacking a Laozi treasure junk, wind and tide forced them to beach themselves in The Stingray Atoll: when they realized that the sheer size of the vessel and the skill of the Laozi soldiers guarding the treasure ship were foiling their gambit, and the small fleet of destroyers protecting the treasure ship were closing in, the captains chose to sail into the lagoon proper, not realizing that the draft of the lagoon was much shallower than the waterways around it. They became stuck here, but were saved from the Laozi destroyer junks, which were dashed upon the craggy rocks leading to the lagoon, or otherwise destroyed by cannonade.
