Coinmaker
The saying goes that "A man is only as good as his word." But what if the man's career is built on deception, stealing and cunning? Then a man's word couldn't be trusted at all.
Many low level thieves and thugs operate off of reputation and references. However, a certain class of criminal - those that operate under the "High Table" - utilize a different method of distinction: Resume Coins and Favor Coins.
Resume Coins are gifted by contractors to crews who perform well. They allow the crews to prove their merits to the standards of the High Table.
Favor Coins are used more broadly.
Favor Coins are used in the underworld as a special type of gold coin. While their use is universal in criminal society, the value of the coin is not measured directly monetary value, but rather in favors, as people pay for a favor of varying monetary value with a single coin; always one coin per favor, as long as a single service can be distinctly selected as worth paying for.
There is not a consistent exchange rate and the coins cannot be exchanged as standard currency, aided by the fact that they are made of wood. Nobody who knows what a Favor Coin is would buy one. It betrays the very purpose of the Coin. The coins can be exchanged for various goods and services in the underworld, be it a weapon, healing, a night of hospitality, clean-up, a map, a key, a passage, and disposal of dead bodies, or a bar tab. The value of each coin can fluctuate depending on the person who holds it; as such, a coin from and Count is more valuable than a coin from a master thief. Since many underworld businesses are disguised as legitimate ones, the presentation of a coin allows access to otherwise hidden services while the public is unsuspecting.
Despite the reliance on the coins, assassination contracts are assigned with a value designated gold pieces.
The coins have images of three-tailed comet over a series of hills. The reverse side is emblazoned with a carbuncle and the words "Je Jalien Vorthan" which is believed to be ancient Nemisian for My Own Path.
