Lumenian Pantheon

The Lumenian Pantheon is one of the left overs from before the fall of the Lumenian Empire. It first came about during the Sundering, roughly a thousand years before the empire's fall. Despite the decline in power the empire suffered at the time, the deities of this pantheon became well known throughout the world during the Sundering. After the fall of the empire the deities were central figures in reviving humanoid life and culture on Tessalia. As such this pantheon has managed to sustain through the ages.
Traditionally Lumenians revere the nature and elemental spirits that power the ley lines and build the fabric of our world. There was no true believing in a higher power. Though this did change during the Sundering, as it became more difficult for most people to connect to the ley lines. This time gave rise to what we know today as the Lumenian Pantheon.
— ”Halloway’s Guide to the Lumenian Empire” by Arthur Halloway

Deities of the Pantheon

The deities of the pantheon are split up mostly between so called gods of protection and gods of destruction. This diffrentiation originates from an old Lumenian nursery rhyme that the bard Lester Acastor turned into prose and published under the titel The Fabulous and Wonderous World of Lumos. While all of the deities are most likely capable of both protection and destruction, the diffrentiation comes more from what they are known for tending towards more.
The only ones of the deity who, despite being mentioned in both the nursery rhyme as well as Acastor's prose, doesn't seem to fall into either category is the Prince of Shadows. His role in the pantheon is to this day somewhat ambiguous. He doesn't seem to have a clear tendency as to wether he brings more destruction or protection.
Throughout the thousands of years the pantheon has existed, several symbols have been created for each of the deities. By the seventh Post Lumenian Cycle most of the symbols have been widely accepted and approved of by the followers of the deities.

Whenever a list of the deities is given, they are often either structure by their current order of power or by their creation order. The latter is more common as it isn't subject to changes. The former is often used when followers want to show how high their god is in the order.

Powers & Influence

Even during their times as mortals, the deities of the Lumenian Pantheon were already rather powerful. Only because of that they were even able to rise to the status of deities. Though it would be far to easy to say they are simply powerful or they can do anything you could ever imagine. While both statements are most certainly true, a more detailed look at some of their more specific powers is no waste of time. At this point it should be mentioned that most gods have certain powers they are more well known for than others. It is completely unknown if this means the gods technically aren't all powerful or if they simply prefer not to show their full powers.

Magic

Due to having merged with the spirits that create and maintain the magical ley lines ruining below the planet, each of the deities have magic capabilities. Some of them, like the Archmage and the Elf Queen, have developed these abilities further and are generally considered to be true masters of the realm of magic. Others, like the Orc Lord and the Giant, prefer to impress with their physical capabilities. Be greatly advised though to underestimate the latter faction for their lack of interest in magic. Despite their lack of interest their skills are far beyond those of any mortal spellcasters.

Immortality

Another result of the deities' connection to the ley lines is the fact that while they are still physical beings, they are at the same time not. In a way one can't even say they live. They exist, but their existence is rather difficult to comprehend for mortals. Powered by his own curiousity though the Archmage has attempted to kill himself and other deities several times before. He eventually came to the conclusion that it is in fact impossible for them to die. Even if one is capable of destroying their physical body, after some time they can reform themselves from the ley lines, where their spirit houses. As such the deities are, in a way, immortal.

Protection & Destruction

And as my eyes gazed upon her grace, they relished in her beauty, knowing that beauty would destroy the world.
— "The Fabulous and Wonderous World of Lumos" by Lester Acastor
The separation between gods of protection and gods of destruction might seem to categorise the gods into evil and good. While this at times could be considered a good indicator for a gods alignment, it must also be said that the gods of the Lumenian Pantheon are more than just physical beings in this world. As such their alignment is varied and shifting and could even change depending on the person praying to them.
The alignment information given above is a result of the alignment they tend to show the most. A god who leans more towards the evil or chaotic will always show at least minor signs of these alignments, even when currently showing their good side. The issues between the gods stem more from their past and their personalities than from their alignments.
It is rather similar with the differentiation between protection and destruction. All gods are capable of both and are worth praying to for both. The categorisation is a snapshot in time that was taken not too long after the fall of the Lumenian Empire. The characteristics they displayed there were what was taken as a basis for their categorisation.
You should keep that in mind next time you judge someone for praying to the Dweller Below or the Diabolist.

Organisations & Followers

While the details as always heavily depend on the specific deity, there are a few general things that can be said about the followers of the Lumenian Pantheon and the way they are organised. Nowadays most people accept that the deities truly exist and are capable of interfering with our mortal lives. It is still rather rare for one of them to actually speak to a mortal. Those that they do chose to speak to will often be seen as their messengers and as such are often leaders of their respective churches.

Over time most of the gods have build up a large enough following for there to be temples or churches, all usually organised under a head church or temple. The major ones are usually under the lead of someone who had heard their respective deity’s voice before. In smaller villages and towns there is often just a small temple that has been build by the locals. Sometimes dedicated to one specific god and sometimes dedicated to all.
While it is a rather private matter as to how someone chooses to follow which god, it should be said that often times when people seek a specific thing they will usually pray to the god in who’s domain this thing falls. As such most people are indeed not followers of a single god but of all gods. They simply chose which god they pray to by their daily needs.
Those that do indeed follow only a single god usually believe that god to be the most capable for all their needs. They still sometimes send a quick prayer to a different god but will usually default to their god in times of need.
If you are searching for the darker side of the world you will often find followers of the gods organised in cults. They are the extremists who believe their god to be the most powerful and capable of defeating the other gods with ease. Most of these cults are a local occurrence and rather small. Only a few have grown enough to be recognised widely even by people who are not part of it. Often times those cults are the ones that at some point cause trouble in the name of their god.

Interference

During the time just before the fall of the empire and the first Post Lumenian Cycle many of the gods used their powers to heavily influence the mortal world. They directed armies and followers in person, sought to conquer more land and power, and they planed the destruction of their enemies. The chaos that persisted in this time almost led to the destruction of Tessalia, several times. But only after the Grand Oracle foretold the downfall of the gods themselves, they decided to sit down together. As a result they formed the pact of non-interference, forbidding any major interference with mortal lives. It should be said though that the pact was rather light in what major interference means.

Chosen

The Chosen of the gods are a rather peculiar and special group of people. Usually there is only one living mortal per deity that has been selected to become a Chosen for that deity. They stand under special protection and guidance of their god. There isn’t much known about how the gods choose their Chosen. What is known though is that they are usually capable mages, fighters, leaders or the like. Their destiny is to further their god’s plan for this world and to spread their influence. As such Chosen often end up right in the middle of conflicts between the gods.

History

With the foundation of our daily lives slowly slipping away we had no choice but to become that foundation ourselves.
— The Archmage, at some point, probably
Throughout history the gods have ever so often influenced every day mortal life. Even after the pact of non-interference they continued doing so, albeit in a less obvious fashion.

Merging with the spirits

During the Sundering the nature and elemental spirits started pulling their influence away from the mortal world. With their power often being abused they decided to begin withholding their powers from mortals. As a result, mortals were limited to the most basic magic, which for many was a rather harsh change.

Several people couldn’t accept this and instead searched for a way to receive greater access to the ley lines, far beyond what was possible before. The one to eventually achieve this was a human wizard who’s name has been lost in time but who is now known as only the Archmage. He found a way to merge his soul, spirit and being as a whole with powerful nature and elemental spirits, becoming a whole different kind of being.
Following his success several other beings also managed to fulfil this process. In the end a total of seventeen creatures managed to successfully merge with spirits and become what we know of as spirits today. They quickly realised the danger it would create if more people were able to merge with spirits. As a result they sealed of the ley lines and destroyed any knowledge of how to merge with spirits. As such they began forming the Lumenian Pantheon.

Invasion from the North

BF stands for Before the Fall and is used to describe the time before the fall of the Lumenian Empire. It’s counterpart is AF for After the Fall.
With seventeen of the most powerful beings from the Lumenian Empire having become even more powerful, some of them began building up their armies to continue ages old feuds with each other. Most notably was the Orcish invasion, 300 BF.
With the Orc Lord having become one of the gods of the Lumenian Pantheon he build up his army of orcs before eventually passing over the Frostback Mountains and marching south towards the forest’s of the elves.
On their way south the orcish army pillaged and plundered, killing hundreds if not thousands of people. By the time they reached the halfway point - the city of Lucia - to their destination, hundred thousands had lost everything and were now seeking refuge. As the Orc Lord approached Lucia even further he did not think for even a moment who could call it their home. The Grand Oracle had originally been born in Lucia and once said she would die there as well. Being immortal now, she had instead taken charge of the city as its leader.
Reign of Chaos
The last thousand years before the fall of the empire were turbulent ones. One brutal and bloody fight followed the next. Rebellions began rising. And nobles kept furthering the downfall. The gods weren't much help either as they waged war against each other.
With the orcish army approach the Grand Oracle devised a plan to save her city from their hunger. Already being build as a fortress into the side of the Frostback Mountains, she completely sealed Lucia up from the outside world, breaking all roads leading up there, closing the gates and casting barriers. Seeing himself challenged for the first time since his invasion began, the Orc Lord couldn't just continue on and leave. Instead he remained and tried to find ways through the barriers. Completely having disregarded his original goal he had become so focused on breaking Lucia's defences that he didn't even notice his approaching doom.
A grand total of 100 days passed. 100 days in which Lucia proved itself to be an untakable fortress. A characteristic that would be remembered for ages to come. During those 100 days, the Elf Queen had joined forces with her half-sisters, the High Druid and the Diabolist, to crush the Orc Lord. With their armies ready they marched to Lucia and in a brutal and bloody fight, slaughtered every single orc that was besieging the city that day.
The Orc Lord was killed at the hands of the Elf Queen. With his death the orcish invasion from the north was dealt with.

Demonic Incursion

With the orcish invasion gone the region should've gone back to being fairly peaceful. What none of the involved parties had anticapted though was the fact that the Diabolist had no intention of that happening. To defeat the Orc Lord she had brought an army of demons, promising her half-sister the Elf Queen that they'd be immediately returning to the Abyss once the orcish army was deafeated.
Instead once the last orc fell while her sister was still locked in battle with the Orc Lord she used the chance to break through Lucia's defences. Demons overran the city within minutes, killing most of its citizens within hours. In a last-ditch effort the Grand Oracle teleported the whole city onto a different plane, leaving anything demonic behind.
While Lucia - at least to popular belief - was saved, the demons that were left behind began their rampage throughout the world. Wherever people lived, demons came and destroyed everything in their way. At this point none of the other deities could just stand by and watch anymore.
With demons spreading faster than anyone could have ever predicted, the gods had their hands full protecting the territory they had claimed as their own. While they all reacted in different ways, they reacted equally violent. This demonic incursion and the deities' reactions to it took a whole total of 17 years, at the end of which most of the Lumenian Empire had turned to ash and dust.

Fall of the Lumenian Empire

Despite the destruction the Demonic Incursion had caused, it still took another 283 years before the Lumenian Empire officially fell. With half of the gods needing time to reform their bodies and the other half busy attending their territory, the empire shifted more and more into chaos.
The ones to take the most blame was the Lumenian Imperial Family. Many regions were overrun by rebellions and uprisings against nobility and the Imperial Family in particular. At the end a massive group of hundreds of people headed from everywhere in the country to the capital city.
When they reached it's gates the guards of the city couldn't stand a chance and as such the city was overrun by an angry mob. The Imperial Family was dragged out of the palace, pulled through the city streets and eventually executed on the main city square. Those that had hoped things to get better afterwards were heavily disappointed.
The region fell from one ruler to the next, splitting up into smaller and smaller chunks until there was nothing left of the original empire.

Rise of Arcadia

With the Lumenian Empire gone many people's lives changed drastically. Those that had once lived in cities and towns now had trouble continuing with their everyday life. Those that lived in villages lost their lords' protection. And those that had already struggled before had now lost every last little thing they had owned.
The 1st Post Lumenian Cycle was a time of change spanning 1.600 years since the time of the empire’s fall. It was most known for cultivating and using magic in people’s daily lives.
Around 100 AF most, if not all of the gods had reformed their physical bodies. Around the same time, the Archmage began working on his new base. Having lost his tower during the fall of the capital city of the empire he required a new home for himself and his experiments. He decided to move further south, creating a mountain just to hide his new home. The tower he created there would later be known as the Crystal Spire.
Over the next 100 years people started settling around the base of the mountain. These first settlements eventuall grew together to from the grand magical city of Arcadia. The city grew as a magnet for all kinds of spellcaster, drawn to the possiblity of studying under one of the greatest mages in all of history.

Gates of Lumia
Building / Landmark | Apr 13, 2020

... are the headquarters of the Grand Church of the Lumenian Pantheon. They can be found within the Vesparian Empire. The surroundings around the keep form a city state under the control of the church.

Considered to be the birthplace of the imperial family of the Lumenian Empire, the Gates of Lumia lie silently on Lake Cassil. It is a massive fortress that was originally build to serve as a place to fall back on in times of need for the imperial family. It served as such for many years before after the creation of the Lumenian Pantheon, being handed over to the first church of the pantheon - the Church of Eternal Light.
Through the following years the fortress was changed into a place of pilgrimage for anyone following the Lumenian Pantheon, but most noticiably those that prayed to the Priestess.
The fortress itself was build on an island on Lake Cassil, designed to be exactly as big as the island itself. A bridge was build across the water to access the fortress, though it also has smaller hidden entrances in case arrival per boat becomes necessary.
Despite the fall of the empire the Gates of Lumia persisted and still stand tall to this day.

Assekian Symbols
The Assekai were a tribe of humans that lived in the Jungles of Sedh. Their language and culture was heavily based on using symbols to communicate. According to archeological findings these symbols even held some actual power. It is unknown exactly how Assekian Symbols did it but they channelled energy from the ley lines through these drawings. As such they served as a source of magic to the Assekai.
After they were first discovered they became rather popular in other cultures due to their beauty in simplicity. Due to their ability to channel the energy of the ley lines through them, those people that lived unter the Lumenian Pantheon believed them to be connected to the gods. Over time each of the gods received a symbol that was associated with them.
In most cultures that follow the Lumenian Pantheon these symbols can be found marking temples, shrines and other places of worship. Some people wear jewellery made to look like these symbols, and others decorate their armour and weapons with them. As such the Assekian Symbols have become heavily intertwined with many cultures, even though their original culture is almost completely lost.

Fool's Folley
Tradition / Ritual | Apr 21, 2020
With the many holidays that are celebrated according to the Lumenian Pantheon, Fool's Folley often gets missed out when people talk about days they are looking forward to. This may be partially due to Fool's Folley being dedicated to the literal god of trickery - the Prince of Shadows himself - though it could also be because it is often laughed upon as a holiday for children
Once a year on Merin 5th, Firewane children - and adults alike - wander the streets, seeking to pray pranks on those that deserve it.
Most of these pranks stay fairly harmless and everyone involved ends up sitting together for a festive meal in the evening. Some pranks though end badly. Those are the ones people say the trickster god himself got involved with. They often end with grievous injuries and in a few rare cases even with death.

Astraval
Tradition / Ritual | Apr 21, 2020
Those cultures that additionally to the Lumenian Pantheon have also adapted the Lumenian Calendar end their year with a three week period of festivals and celebration, dedicated to the gods. While in the calendarium this period received the name Fellnight, for cultures that have adapted the Lumenian Pantheon it is more commonly known as Astraval.
Each of the 15 days of Astraval are dedicated to one of the gods. As usual the Prince of Shadows has no honoury day, trickery and chaos not matching the spirit people were going for with the end year festival.
Despite not always agreeing with each the Elf Queen and the High Druid share a celebratory day as sisters. With their blood and domains being similar it felt right to the people to honour them equally. That they also couldn't decide which one of them should be honoured first also played part in this.
In general Astraval is a festival most people look forward to the whole year. For merchants it is one of the most lucrative times of the years. For farmers and other workers it is the most relaxed time as loud or hard work is strictly forbidden. Many cities and towns prepare weeks if not months in advance for the festival and offer a myriad of attractions to their visitors. As such it comes to no surprise that Astraval is many people's favourite festival.

Dawn's Wake
Tradition / Ritual | Apr 21, 2020
The last day of each week throughout the year is reserved for Dawn's Wake. Originally created as a day to honour the Great Gold Wyrm and his efforts in keeping the abyss sealed, it eventually evolved into a much broader holiday.
In most cultures today Dawn's Wake is a day of full rest. While merchants and anyone doing only light work is busier than ever, anyone who's daily life is filled with hard work rests on this day. Instead of with work, this day is spent taking care of necessary shopping, spending time with the family and with friends, as well as time spent at the local temple.
In the Vesparian Empire every citizen is required to spend at least an hour of the day at the temple, praying and honouring the gods. Leaving donations at the temples is highly encouraged and rarely anyone ever leaves without making one.

Afterlife
According to Lumenian belief after death a person's soul returns to the Elemental Flow - the flow of magical energy that forms the ley lines that run through Tessalia. From there most souls are reincarnated at some point, having no memories of their previous lives. Most people are never affected and never even find out about their previous lives. The few who do usually find that it is because one of the gods intervened.
Some people as such base a person's destiny indeed on what they might have achieved in a previous life and claiming - and being able to prove - to have achieved greatness before can often lead to a somewhat hero cult forming around that person.

Calendarium
Despite having been created only after the fall of the empire, the Lumenian Calendar is much more intertwined with the Lumenian Pantheon than it would seem at first glance. The time since the fall of the Lumenian Empire has been split up into cycles of each 1.600 year.
During each cycle the power balance between the gods shifts slightly, sometimes more, sometiems less. For mortals these shifts are usually not noticeable as the deities have agreed to not carry their wars out on the backs of mortals in the Pact of Non-Interference. The phase of power for each of the gods is roughly a 100 years long.
With seventeen gods and cycle lengths of 1.600 years it is clear one god is missing. Not very surprisingly this god is the trickster god himself, The Prince of Shadows. For the most part he has never gotten involved with power shifts and many even wonder if he should be included in the pantheon. As a result the Lumenian Calendar completely ignores him in the shift of power.

While the Archmage did indeed build schools in and support the city of Arcadia, he stayed out of most mortal business and refused to teach any mortals. Together with the Priestess and the Grand Oracle he made a pact which disallowed them to interfere with mortal lives directly.
With the city's they had made their homes as well as their powers prospering, the other deities agreed to sit down together. Meeting at the Crystal Spire, it took 17 years of discussion, argument, threats and promises for the gods to finally agree on the Pact of Non-Interference. With the pact signed, the gods pulled themselves out of mortal affairs, ending their meddling and direct interference.
While officially the gods no longer involved themselves in conflicts between the mortals or between each other, behind the scenes they often still sent out their chosen or used mortals to further their own schemes.

Minor Deities

While the seventeen deities mentioned and referenced above are most certainly the most important ones, there are a myriad of creatures that could be considered minor deities.

Elemental & Nature Spirits

Before the Lumenian Pantheon came to exist as it is now, the people of the Lumenian Empire prayed directly to the elemental and nature spirits that made up the fabric of their world. Running through the ley lines they were and are what allows wizards, sorcerers and warlocks to use magic.
Unlike the major deties, the spirits don't have a personality and form as individuals. They are a pure mass of energy, though people often like to think of them in terms of Spirit of Good Harvest, Spirit of Snow and the like.
While it is not as popular anymore to pray directly to the spirits, there are still people who do so. In the Lumenian Pantheon they are as such considered minor deities. As there are no major religious organisations dedicated to the spirits themselves temples for them are almost unheard of. Smaller villages often have shrines though that can sometimes be dedicated to certain spirit types.
Despite having inherited the nature and partially powers of their godly parents, demigods are far from being true deities.
— "On the Nature of Gods" by Azarel Uldoon

Demigods

Similarly to the elemental and nature spirits, demigods are usually not prayed to directly. They are the children of the gods, having inherited some - usually quite varrying - amount of their parents' godly powers. They are not inherently immortal, though it is not unheard of for them to become so later in their lives.
Some demigods live out their mortal lives without ever being bothered by their godly parent. Others though seem to have only been born to their begging. As they often share characteristics with their godly parent often more so than with their mortal parent, they quite often end up working for or with them.
As children of the gods, demigods do deserve to be mentioned here though it should be noted yet again that it is highly unusual to pray to a demigod.

Perception & Reception throughout the World

Throughout most of the world the Lumenian Pantheon is generally viewed as described above. A few other pantheons exist, most of which have adapted their own separate gods. There are a few pantheons though that have adapted gods that are quite simliar to those of the Lumenian Pantheon and are often considered second personas for them.
