Teutonian Politics
Political stances have ever been divisive within the nation. Occasionally and regrettably, this divisiveness has led to open conflict as one political ideology clashes with another.
Politics is not only of a secular purview either; the churches are powerful political forces within the nation and often will play out clashes of faith within the realm of nobles and courts. This being said, The Synod are not entirely protected from secular political interference with church matters either, driving conflicts within the faiths that benefit powerful groups or nobles.
Since the formation of Teutonia, through the reigns of kings, emperors and usurpers, several political parties have consolidated, each with their own views on the best way to help Teutonia. Descriptions of the parties can be found below.
Vipers
At their core, members of the Viper political faction believe that a strong Teutonia is one led by a monarch, that a strong city is one ruled by a noble, that a king must be in place to rule over the land; this is a divine right given by the gods. The membership of the Vipers tend to be the most religiously diverse, worshipping all of the Teutonian gods and holding only Syth/Sythis high among them.
It is said that as long as a king sits on the throne of Teutonia, no harm can befall the nation. In truth, it does not matter to a Viper whether that king is cruel, benevolent or corrupt. As long as the gods put them there, they would obediently and blindly follow.
Cobras
The Cobras are a political entity who believe that the ruler of the nation or a city is to be chosen by the people, to watch over and protect them.
This idea of meritocracy understandably holds huge political sway over the common folk of Teutonia. Although not staunchly religious, they acknowledge the triumvirate – the more common religions of Sythis, Bane and Mortis.
If the Cobras believe that the Vipers have enthroned a callous and cruel monarch, they strive to remove them through any means. This has previously led to one of the many conflicts known colloquially as The Serpent Wars.
Pythons
The Pythons are one of the smallest but most effective of the political factions. Staunch followers of the god Khoreg, the interpreted will of Khoreg rules all of their decisions. If it is believed that Khoreg agrees with the choice of monarch or city ruler, they will follow them relentlessly.
They are extremely skilled in the art of war and often were the front line in any attack/defence of the nation. When not at the front line, they would generally stand as the monarch’s most loyal servants and bodyguards. The Python Paladins were the most feared warriors in the land.
Following the second Serpent War, it was believed that the Pythons had been eradicated. This belief was proved incorrect in 1112 when Albert Von Wolfsburg raised an army against the Empress Callista Aurelia. He was eventually defeated in 1114 at the Battle of Tal Teutoburg, and his forces were scattered. The Empress declared all Pythons outlawed, however this order has more recently been rescinded in the name of uniting the nation once again.
Mambas
The Mambas are exclusively Beastfolk, and very little is known of their political agenda. It is rumoured that this was once the political faction of the ancient, long-lived beastmen of Teutonia – one that later became the Mo’Ordinai senate. The Mo’Ordinai, after years of seeing the other snake factions tear the country apart, decided to forgo personal power and put the nation first by giving advice to its rulers and helping them to rule justly and fairly for all peoples of the land. Longer lived than the younger races, they placed survival of the nation above petty politics. Their religious devotions are varied, yet they place a god known as Silva as highest.
In recent years, they have revealed more of themselves and fought alongside both Cobras and Vipers in an alliance against warriors who subscribed to the beliefs of the Python.
