The Jaeger (Yay-guh)

Teutonians have long-held history and folklore regarding a group of elite scouts known as the Jaeger, who are fiercely loyal to the nation and the ruler but aloof and answerable to no recognised authority outside of their own ranks. Their own history and legacy is secret and known only to those who hold high rank within the organisation. The Jaeger remain one of the true enigmas of the Teutonian people, save that they are there when they are needed. What knowledge is known by outsiders to their organisation is that they are the finest scouts the nation has to offer. The Jaeger hold no political position within Teutonia, choosing to serve the land and its people, as well as all the gods. The Jaeger provide information during times of war and peace. Separate to the TCSOs, they only nominally seek to report activity, troop movements and unacceptable actions within the land.

Structure

It is unknown exactly how many Jaegar operate within Teutonia. Members of the Reichstag and senior military officials claim the ability to contact them when needed but most of the time they are elusive and choose when to reveal their information and to whom.

Public Agenda

Very little is known about the practices of the Jaeger following their departure, save that they continue to serve Teutonia and that the rumours surrounding their base of operations is that it is a haunted location, with no guests able to stay there longer than two days before being driven off by ghosts. Their training and abilities as deep cover scouts still remain a mystery. When an individual is chosen to be Jaeger, all world possessions and property are left behind, and a reminder from whence they came is tattooed below the left shoulder. They often spend years undercover, or scouting an area, living in the wilds in order to protect Teutonia, communicating only via heavily encoded written message to their superiors. Their training takes years and rumours of a “final trial” are whispered in certain circles.
Jaegar serve the land and its people regardless of who leads the nation. They are reputed to be unmatched as trackers and scouts, making use of a variety of skills to complete their missions. Trained in wilderness survival, it is said that a Jaegar can hide in plain sight and move amongst the enemy unnoticed. They are not usually reported as assassins but have completed such missions. Information and subterfuge is their preferred trade.

History

In 1097, when the drow house Alu’Rethi came to the surface, they hired a group of mercenaries called the Hawks to be their bodyguards and guides on the surface. The drow then joined the then Viper nation, under Lord Protector Harriatta. After several years of traveling with them, the Matron Mother Illharess became a recognised noble of the nation, as did Kreig, the leader of the Hawks, who then hung up their mercenary boots and subsequently became the 52nd Regiment of Teutonia.   The 52nd took control of the city of Hanover and their numbers grew, with the majority of them also taking up the worship of the god Syth. With the growth of the unit, they formed two separate groups operating in unison: heavy infantry and light scouts. These were led jointly by two of the original Hawks, a human barbarian named Stronger Ap David and a troll by the name of Gregor Skuttlebutt. This was the first incarnation of the Jaeger.   Following the Alu’Rethi’s disgrace and removal from the warhost, Skuttlebutt’s departure following political and religious fervour, and the death of Krieg and the rest of the 52nd, the remaining Jaeger opted to depart from the warhost to train more of their own and recoup their losses. For their service to Teutonia they were gifted a fort by Lord Hagen and Lord Johanases just outside of Hanover, near the Rhine. This fort was named The Fang.
