The Witch's Children
A hundred years ago in a village in one of the less treacherous areas of the Black Forest the crops were failing, and the villagers were scared. At the edge of the village there lived two orphans, the children of a witch who had been burned when they were but babes and the villagers feared that they had followed in their mother's footsteps and had learnt cruel and evil magic with which to punish them in revenge for the death of their mother.
As the hunger of the villagers grew and the foul stench of rotting livestock began to envelope the village fear turned to blame. The villagers noticed how they whispered to each other, how strangely their eyes shifted, and how the blight and disease seemed to follow them whenever they visited a farm. They were a pair of worms eating at the heart of the villagers peaceful lives.
One night after now angry villagers confronted the children and attempted to investigate their home, the tavern was burned to the ground in an unnaturally ferocious blaze killing several of the villagers. The finger of accusation knew where to point, and it pointed directly at the children; pestilence, death, and heartbreak were all their doing. Torches were lit and kindling was gathered, then straight to the orphans house they marched. They ripped out the sister's eyes and tore out the brother's tongue and cheered at their screams, then they burned down the house with the children inside.
To the horror of the villagers though this only made their troubles worse. People began to disappear from the village only to be returned bearing the mutilations they had inflicted on the children. Soon they were too afraid to leave their homes. \they cowered as the ghosts of the children passed by, humming their eerie song. One by one they were taken and one by one they came back, eye gouged, and tongues burned out until they all learned the price of their actions.
