Unification War Military Conflict in The 'Verse | World Anvil

Unification War

The Unification War was a war fought between the Union of Allied Planets and the Independent Planets from 2506 to 2511.   Many historians note the disparity of system resources and technology between several planets of the central White Sun system and the other Outer Planets orbiting the other suns and protostars of the 'Verse as the impetus that led to the War. The concentration of technology and resources in these "Central Planets" (or "Core") had left the outer planets in a position to fend for themselves. After years of unsatisfactory talks, the local governments of several of these outer planets—most notably Hera, Shadow, and Persephone—decided to secede from the Alliance and gathered support of other planets.   Whether the intention was to function as wholly independent worlds each with separate governments or with the intention of starting their own alliance—on this point, the records are a bit unclear. Some of these historians claim that because the Alliance could not accept this loss of face, so began the war. But others site economic reasons since the shear volume of interplanetary trade and commerce was projected to dwarf the stagnating Core world economies and thus used the "saving face" sabre-rattling merely as pretext.   Some of the most notable battles of the War include:
  • the Battle of Sturges - fought entirely as a space battle; largest battle casualty count
  • the Battle of Du-Khang (2510)
  • the New Kashmir campaign - a long winter
  • the Battle of Serenity Valley - the last major battle of the war, commonly cited as the reason for the Independents surrender
Although initially highly successful, the Independent Faction eventually lost naval superiority followed by their army's ground advantages. With the aforementioned Battle of Serenity Valley, the Independent High Command was forced into armistice and signed a treaty of surrender in 2511.

The Conflict

Outcome

Due to the widespread devastation in the various theaters of war (mostly Independent worlds like Shadow and Hera) the primary focus is to bring the former faction under official governmental regulation and to repair the damage done in the war-torn areas (although pro-Unification worlds seem to be getting the attention first). Also, the whole economy is struggling to recover as repatriation efforts continue. This is beginning to lead to widespread unemployment, stagnating trade (due to vastly increased regulation), and a marked increase in crime and discrimination.   In an effort to hunt down war criminals (usually Independents) the Alliance deputized mercenaries called Unificators.
