The Ourvorax

Nexiles Serpentes

The wreathe of strands of power that hold together and give life to The Astrums is called many names, The Taggala, The Nyoka, and others, but for the purposes of this journal we will call this knot of magic The Ourvorax. As far as we know, it was the beginning, so it will most likely be the end. The Ourvoax created the first of its children before time was even linear, we have named them The Forgotten. Can you guess why, dear reader? Well, it is because of the actions committed by the second children of The Ouvorax, The Arxi, or as they are named now: The Fulcra and The Fallen. If these groups of deities have shaped our Astrum, The Mortal Realm, Altus, for better or worse, I cannot say. But I need to stay on topic, I shall write another entry about The Forgotten, The Fulcra, and The Fallen another time.   The Ourvorax is considered a living, breathing thing, but no being knows its designs or intentions, not even the aforementioned deities. The strands of magic in The Ourvorax are tangled in such a complicated manner that is impossible to tell where one strand of magic begins and where one ends. No one knows the true form of The Ourvorax. Magic typically shows the onlooker whatever they desire. Magic is meant to be alive, is meant to be harnessed. We must be careful not to be corrupted by the power magic offers because soon we won't be using it, it will be using us.

Manifestation

Sailors used to believe that the strands of magic they would see in the oceans of Altus were sea serpents. This led to the iconography of The Ourvorax being a tangle of snakes, all biting each other's tails. Scholars adopted the snake motif because as they developed instruments to study the strands, they found they "slithered" like snakes in a nest. Now that is a terrifying image, but it is a good lesson to be careful with magic because you may be stepping into a viper's nest.

Localization

The oceans of Altus are filled with untamed and unbridled magic, making them the most dangerous environment. It is believed that one of The Forgotten was struck down by The Arxi and before it faded, like the rest of its siblings, it bled out or something akin to it. It is hard to believe a being like that can bleed. Anyway, it was hurt, and from its hurt came power. There are many theories as to why the oceans ended up with this power, but I say that this particular Forgotten subconscious created the oceans so this unleashed power fled to what it knew. Others say it was just the wrong place at the wrong time, that the Forgotten was struck in the oceans and therefore the power just went to the closest force of nature for safety. Either way, this is why sailors see pure magic in the ocean led to the knotted snake iconography. It seems the main localization of this power is in The Arch Sea.

The Common Perspective

Now, this is a very scholarly perspective. Common knowledge is that magic exists and connects the world, but people don't nessecarily know why or how. It is sometimes looked upon with suspicion because people don't want to be connected to things they don't like. People have their own names and understanding for magic based on their cultures and languages.

Author's Notes

I appreciate you reading this article! I tried to come at it from a perspective of a knowledgeable being in the world that doesn't quite know everything but wants too. Do you like this approach? I personally feel like it gives my players more freedom. The vagueness is also intentional so it is up to interpretation for different characters and cultures. Also, I studied Latin for a while, but it was a long time ago. You will have to forgive me if I got my phrasing wrong! I tried to include other languages too because a world like this would have multiple languages calling things different names. Nyoka I believe is Swahili and taggala is Gaelic, but that could be wrong. Let me know if it is! If you see any mistakes I have made or something that can be improved, please let me know!
