Reedrafts
A common method of transportation in Thripia is the reedraft. Made from rivergrass, they are frequently used outside the city walls in poorer, agricultural areas due to the ease and relatively cheap cost at which they can be made. They have been used on the Meleatte River for many hundreds of years as the design was first pioneered by the Aradin tribes who lived in the area.
Apperance
Reedrafts are made from the distinctly pale-green fibers of rivergrass which have been lashed together into the shape of a crescent so that both ends of the craft remain out of the water. They are widest at the middle of the boat to accommodate as many people and as much cargo as possible. The vessel is also relatively long, standing it may be the height of three men, often for the purpose of storing fishing spears.Usage
As effective and affordable transportation, reedrafts are used for travelling up and down the Meleatte River as well as down irrigation canals in farm fields. A simple oar is used to steer and propel the vessel. As well as for transportation and travelling to and fro, reedrafts are often used for finishing. It is not uncommon to see the boats sitting on the Meleatte with fishermen using spears and nets from within the raft. For the Aradin peoples, the reedraft has slightly more significance as it is often used in funerary processions wherein the deceased is placed inside the vessel along with various precious belongings before being sent down the river and set alight.
