Matters of Twice and Thrice Borns

The inter-breeding and reproduction of dissimilar Eshanic races is an ancient practice. Unlike the relationship between the Eshan and mortals, wherein procreation is impossible, there are no such boundaries between mortals themselves. However, the physiological makeup of Eshanic races were not created with the concept of intermixing in mind. Aemar differ greatly from Etayen, Odyrzid from Axodraharik, Daorhu from Viscari, and onward. The first instances of this form of biological exchange between mortals came during the Awakening, between Daorhu and Odryzid popularions in Everos and Othos, and Aemar in those places. One must remember that the Etayen and Axodraharik were not yet known to the world during that period. The offspring of these irregular and strange unions were despised by both cultures, for they were malformed, sickly, and intellectually feeble creatures.   Mongrel mortals in Qadal existed beyond the pale of civilization. They were shunned, demented beings whom the Eshan themselves despised with cruel fervor. The first among them were breeds created through the intermixing of Aemar and Daorhu.   Etal’s ascension and the colonial expansion of Étunas exacerbated the dilemma of mortal interbreeding. Beginning with the Adash peoples of the Semyr islands, the Etayen married and settled alongside Aemardic cultures. Barring outbursts of racial violence and dynastic conflict, the relationship was characterized by a tense but long-standing peace. Half-bred mortals proliferated in this environment. The   Etayen called these beings Thûnetal, or half-spirited Etayen. The Aemar knew them as Etamas. In a manner akin to the Daorhu and Aemar breeds of the Awakening, the Thûnetal were pariahs within their own socieities.   As Qadayen history progressed, intimate and sustained contact between Eshanic races became common. Etayen settled alongside Aemar, as did the Daorhu and recently arrived Axodraharik. Not only were there half-breeds along borders of contact, but thrice-born as well!   Only in later centuries were select mongrel races offered some measure of mercy. In Nevan, the Axokarialar, bred between the Daorhu and Axodraharik, were sheltered within the Kingdom of the Soaring Stars. They were made attendents of those reborn halls and protected from surrounding Aemar assailants. In a similar vein, the Thûnetal bred from Etayen and Aemar were gradually accepted in Everos and Othos after the collapse of Étunas.
