Madam Alaneo

(a.k.a. Old Mam)

Madam Alaneo is an elderly fortune teller who has a stall at the Green Market in Saltmarsh.   She has been coming to the market almost every day for as long as anyone can remember. She walks into town early every morning from her home, which is said to be somewhere in the swamps to the west of the port. Despite her age she still makes the long walk back home every night.   Madam Alaneo is respected by almost everyone, most of whom simply refer to her as "Old mam". Even those who do not believe in her abilities to tell fortunes consider her harmless and kind.   Throughout the working day the local townsfolk bring her food and milk to sustain her, and she never has to pay for anything.   Madam Aleano sells a few trinkets from her stall, but her main skills lie in the reading of palms and Tarokka readings.   Her most precious possession is a set of Tarokka Cards that she inherited from her grandmother. The value of the cards does not lie in their monetary worth, but rather in the powers of foretelling that the supposedly impart on the old woman.   Only Keledek, the sage of Saltmarsh, does not seem to show any respect to Alaneo. He calls her a confidence trickster, and is said to have attempted to persuade the Saltmarsh Town Council to evict her on several occasions.

Appearance and Mannerisms

Madam Alaneo is an old woman, stooped so much that she always appears to be looking at her feet. Her wrinkled face, with rosy cheecks lined with pink veins hints that she may have been comely a long, long time ago. Yet there is still a sparkle of adventure in her bright eyes.   Shoulder length white hair peeks from under a red scarf that she wears tied around her head. Her clothes are simple and plain, of a deep green. She walks with the aid an unadorned bent stick.   Despite her age, her eyes peer with unusual, uncomfortable intensity at those she is speaking with, and her grip is as strong as an ox.

Notable Achievements

Madam Alaneo is said to have once saved the life of Eda Oweland, many years ago. Old mam went out of her way to warn Eda not to head out with the fishing boats one Planting day, having foreseen a terrible storm in her dreams.   Indeed, the two boats that Eda sent out were both wrecked in a storm that blew up suddenly in Salting Bay, and were driven onto the reefs, resulting in the loss of five men. Luckily Eda had heeded the old fortune teller's words and had stayed ashore.
