Delvian Crystal
Properties
Material Characteristics
Delvian Crystals are tall and pillar like, appearing in large clusters across cave walls. Their color various depending on what is in their proximity (red if primarily around large amounts of heat for example).
Physical & Chemical Properties
Mana absorption is incredibly rare among materials, of which Delvian Crystals are the most common among them and are capable of doing so passively and without needing it to be provoked with magic or another resource.
Geology & Geography
Large Cave systems that house organic life is where Delvian Crystals are most commonly found. Gargantuan clusters usually line the walls of long and narrow tunnels that enter or exit the system.
History & Usage
Everyday use
It’s rare to find a magic item that doesn’t have a Delvian Crystal attached to it. Wether is be in the form of a sword pommel, the lining of a spear tip, the end of a wand, or the lens of a pair of glasses.
Hazards
Harvesting Delvian Crystals should be done with caution as larger crystals can animate and use the mana they absorb to grow their cluster. This leads to clusters attempting to grow onto living creatures, trapping them and using them as a source of mana. The only way to test for animated crystal is by slowly picking crystal off a wall and looking for any creatures that may become free from this chipping.
Distribution
Trade & Market
Settlements and outposts that are sustained by Delvian Crystals (let it be trade or use) are incredibly rare as cave systems that hold them tend to be incredibly dangerous to enter. When a cluster is found it’s more common for the company that found it to hire one or more adventuring parties to collect it for them. A famous exception to this is the town of Delvin in Novus.
Law & Regulation
To reap the magical benefits of the crystals requires vigorous precision and advanced education to accomplish so laws restricting who can or cannot own Delvian Crystals are nearly inexistant. Places like Hagsfield and Camelot (area’s near M.I.M.I.C.) do require notification when a citizen acquires a crystal or if a visitor is carrying them.
