Lichdom
Lichdom is a biological and magical change in a creature that turns them into a lich. Liches are undead creatures that have a powerful hold over magic, having the ability to instinctively cast spells and alter them with intent alone. These changes in spell casting can be incredibly dramatic, allowing liches to have access to a large number of abilities while utilizing a small number of spells. For the usual spellcaster, a change in spell takes concentration, skill, and practice, usually resulting in small changes.
The way of achieving lichdom is a highly secretive process as its under divine protection. What is known about it is that it’s accomplished through a series of alchemical rituals, requiring rare materials and precise timing. What is most notoriously known about the process is the final step of separating soul and body, the lich placing its soul within an object or creature (known as their phylactery) so that it may feed off its power.
Liches are seen as dangerous because the dedication required to learn the proper rituals alone usually means that the lich is willing to go many lengths to get what it wants, not to mention the willingness to be put through what must be terrible effects from said rituals. This, as well as the power associated with lichdom, is why many who achieve it have targets on their back.
To protect themselves, liches typically stay in hiding, disguising themselves as reserved human wizards who only wishes to live a simple and quiet life in their secret towers or laboratories. Liches also go great lengths to hide their phylactery; for as long as the phylactery exists the lich may use it to return to undeath in case its body becomes too damaged to function.
Most quests surrounding the elimination of a lich targets it’s phylactery, requiring many magics and skill to locate it, secure it, and destroy it.
