The breathing ridge

The breathing ridge is a long mountain range that divides the land in two. The mountains got their name from the many large holes that can be found there. Warm air continuously travels in and out of these holes, as if they're breathing.

Geography

The countless peaks that make up the ridge are trapped in a perpetual winter as snow can be found here during all seasons of the year. At lower altitudes a more tundra-like landscape can be found, which is the home of many unique species of plants and animals.   Obsidian pillars decorate the landscape of the mountains, similar to the White desert.

Ecosystem

The heat given off from the unique "breathing holes" on the mountains are essential for the survival of several species as they seek shelter from the harsh cold. The warm air that flows out of the holes carry with them minerals and moisture which provide the perfect contitions for certain plants that can only be found growing around the holes. In turn, these plants have a high nutritional value and are vital for the herbiviorous animals living on the mountain range.

Ecosystem Cycles

During warmer months the lower parts of the mountains sheds its layers of snow and become a green tundra which welcomes many creatures to feast on the nutritious mosses and berries. During this time the burbosa gather to mate and rear their young, but the abundance of life attracts predators, such as the rarely seen gigil.   During the colder months the mountains turn into a desolate wasteland. At this time the only way for the herbivores to survive is to eat the plants growing near the breathing holes. The geallas especially thrive during this time as the lack of predators give them the opportunity to rear more kits, despite the harsh weather conditions.

Localized Phenomena

Perhaps the most notable feature of these mountains are the many "breathing holes" that can be found all over the craggly landscape, which is how the mountain range got its name. These holes are usually several meters across and are seemingly bottomless. Warm air flows in and out of these hole rythmically, giving the appearence of the ground itself is breathing. No one who has fallen into one of these holes has ever made it back.   The mountains also house the largest amount of obsidian pillars in the land. These large, dark stones sticking right up from the ground create sparks when struck with hard objects.
