Saint Michael's Mountain

The island of St Michael's Mount lies approximately 0.6 miles off the coast, at the mouth of the Couesnon River near the City of Avranches and is 17 acres in area.   A monastic establishment was constructed here in the 8th century.   Unable to defend his kingdom against the assaults of the Norse, the king of the Franks, Charles the Bald, agreed to grant the Cotentin peninsula and the Avranchin, including the Mountain, to the Bretons following the Battle of Brissarthe.

History

The island was used in the sixth and seventh centuries as an Armorican stronghold of Gallo-Roman culture and power until it was ransacked by the Franks.   In the 8th century St. Aubert, bishop of Avranches, built an oratory here after having a vision of the archangel St. Michael.
