(a.k.a. Dead Gentleman found at the Devil's Rock Pile)

A dead man found at the Devil's Rock Pile, north of Osage Mission, on or around March 10th, 1873.   He was found by Evigar Minton and Jasper Sakes, 12-year-old boys residing in Osage Mission.   He smells of brimstone and has no apparent wounds upon his body.   Sheriff Andersen has him on cold storage beneath Harmon Strand & Son, butchers.   Leland Harmon emptied the dead man’s pockets. They amounted to around $90 in coins and bills and a small brass key (like would go to an expensive piece of luggage or something similar).   It is likely that he killed three old women at a cottage northwest of Osage Mission on the Neosho River sometime between March 5th and March 10th.

Physical Description

General Physical Condition

He is a dead white man, short brown hair shot with grey, a small neat mustache, small octagonal purple glasses, dressed for the weather in a nice woolen overcoat, long jacket [the jacket is from Cardwell Bros. of Boston], bowler hat [the hat is from Hughley’s in NYC], wool scarf, vest, wool trousers, boots, and lined leather gloves. He carries a gold pocket watch with silver and enamel bob at the other end. He has a ticket on the Katy from Fort Scott to the Osage Mission dated February 5th. Tucked into his vest pocket is a fine derringer pistol. There is a leather-bound journal in his breast pocket – written in some sort of cypher. It does contain diagrams and drawings though.

Identifying Characteristics

He has a lot of old scars on this body – fine cuts, slashes, and punctures (a couple are bullet wounds, most are not). He is extraordinarily fit, but aspects stick out: he has thick wrists and strong trapezoids and glutes. Lots of scars and callouses on his hands and fingers – and a pronounced artists’ bump on his right hand.

Apparel & Accessories

  • A traveling bag containing his effects: clothes, toiletries, etc.
  • A leather folio containing charcoal portraits of three mature women (two with light hair, one with dark).
  • Working clothes: long black slicker, hip boots, broad-brimmed black hat, long leather gloves, and a black oil-cloth mask. Some attempt has been made to clean them of blood, but there are old and deep stains.
  • A brace of Harper’s Ferry Pistols (in very good condition).

Specialized Equipment

A very sharp Knight's broadsword and scabbard.
