Fae
The people of Skylark Island believe in fairies. Legend has it that the ancestors of the current community of Skylark Island were The Fae. These are not the fairies of fairytales, but magic-blessed beings living on an enchanted isle.
The story goes that some were drawn, by good or by evil, to love mortals from the mainland. The community became a blended one, and those who had kept their sacred vow simply faded into shadow and spirit, still present in the flames in the fireplace, and the wind in the trees, and the swell of the seas.
They say the island is still enchanted, and Fae blood still runs in their veins, no matter how faintly. The blessings sung into a person's coming-of-age broadcloth are real, and magical.
There is an ancient bolt of cloth called The Fae Cloth, and they say it was waulked by the Fae long ago. Families on the island take turns to be caretaker of it, in its glass case.
Some believe, and some do not. Some follow the superstitions and leave a portion of food out for The Fae at every feast, and some think it a waste of good food that goes to naught but feeding the rodents.
For example, Grannie Moon believes, but Jo Ravencall thinks it's complete tosh, and this leads to come good banter between them.
