Jocasta 'Jo' Ravencall*

Mender

Created and played by Sue Lee
Everyone in the Ravencall family except for Jo is dead now. She's been a widow for many years, and has no children. She's the last of a line of Ravencalls on Skylark Island.   Jo is a Mender in this community, pulling together all the stories and loose threads, both literal and metaphorical.   She's a hunter gatherer / forager for berries and bits of wool, dye ingredients. She walks for miles gathering, and she knows the paths.   Her croft is full of stuff. There's a great big wall with all sorts of things: twenty seven different sorts of needles, and spools, and feathers. Bits and pieces collected on walks around the island: a flower that you could use for dye. Sewing and mending tools, some of which are at least 100 years old. She knows what most of them do. Jo gathers all these things up and puts them in pots along with things she's never used, but might one day.   Jo's family is relatively new to the community, having only been here for about 200 years. They married in from one of the other islands.   That's one of the reasons why she became a mender: to become integrated and find out things you wouldn’t know unless you’ve lived somewhere for a thousand years.   You can always get a cup of tea and some cake at Jo's place. There’s always cake available. And whiskey. The island has its own distillery, and that's Jo. She runs it in the back of the croft.   Many years ago there used to be a communal bread oven, but now she's the one who bakes scones, and rock buns.   During tea and cake, information often lands in Jo's lap. She's a repository of secrets: people visit for a cup of tea and cake and a listening ear. She is NOT a gossip though. She's trustworthy: it gets shared only when absolutely necessary.   Jo and Grannie Moon have a slightly antagonistic relationship. They feel differently about The Fae, for example: Grannie believes, but Jo thinks it’s all complete tosh. It leads to some good banter between them.   She volunteers in the shop once a week, knows whose baking is not up to muster, and is regarded as a bit of an agony aunt / confessional by the community.
