Slavery

As old as people have had to words to proclaim property, others have endeavored to ensure some system has been in place to make others a part of said property. The most common form is as a consequence of punishment, those charged with maiming or crippling someone may find themselves cast into slavery and the property of the family of those they harmed - this is a custom widely practiced within the Villani Empire. Regardless, the exact way slavery is forced upon a person can vary considerably with culture. Amongst the Dwarves slaves come in two forms: Those conquered by conquest (as with a large number of hobgoblins and debt based. However even slaves formed from debt have some rights (such as the right to buy their freedom). whereas Dwarven slaves may be used to gather resources or perform service jobs, Dwarven slaves do not craft or manufacture - craftsmanship was a gift from the gods to dwarves, a holiness a slave would foul. Amongst the Juanni of the Shire Isles slaves as treated in a manner more similar to cattle and other forms of livestock. Within the Villani Emprie captured combatants in battle, their poorest denizens, and criminals are frequently pressed into slavery.   Slavery is abhorred by some cultures, in particular the Elves and Trolls of the Alaman forest, however even these cultures, as with most, maintain some form of indentured servitude. Those who worship the 4 paths of light, or Bahamos also typically hold the practice in a dim view. The Church of 4 Lights also known as the Church of Bahamos are one of the few entities that actively works to abolish the practice.
