Thomas
Thomas Halley
I am shocked and offended that you would accuse me of faking my disability to run a con! Offended, I say! Grant you, I am running a con, but the disability is very real!
Thomas Halley is not a bad man. He's never laid a finger on someone save for self defence, and never stolen from someone who didn't deserve it. Granted, his definition of "deserving it" is "gullible and patronizing enough to fall for one of my tricks."
He always has a glass diamond in his pocket and a heartstrings-pulling story on his lips. If his silvertongue weren't enough to empty a target's pockets, his crutches seal the job. After all, it's hardly as if the tragic, crippled lad with the withered leg could be playing you. There are at least a dozen towns across Normandy that he doesn't dare return to.
Mental characteristics
Personal history
Thomas was born to a wealthy family in Oxfordshire. His father was the local magistrate, and his mother was the daughter of a doctor. He grew up with one younger sister in a large home in the countryside.
At the age of 6, he became terrible ill with a paralyzing illness. Although he survived, his mobility never fully recovered. Both of his legs are weak, with his right leg in particular being almost fully paralyzed. Since childhood, he's relied on a pair of wooden crutches to get around.
He has always been vague on details surrounding his family. In his late teens, he went through a falling out with his family that ended in him striking out on his own. He turned his back on his family and his inheritance, intent on earning his own fortune. He travelled to France, hoping to strike it rich in the more prosperous country.
Thomas' plans of striking it rich didn't turn out the way he hoped. Out of money but too proud to return home, he turned to running scams to make a quick buck and discovered he is very good at it. By playing up the role of helpless cripple, Thomas lulls his targets into lowering their guard, and then feels no guilt at scamming people who dared pity him. This career has turned out to be quite enjoyable to him, and he is currently on a plan of scamming his way across France to fund a holiday to Florence.

Social
Family Ties
He is not close with his family. Growing up, he always had a better relationship with his father than his mother. His mother never approved of his bookish nature and saw him as a burden after he became crippled. His father tended to excuse behaviours his mother was irritated by. However, his goals and his family's goals eventually became too distant even for his father to excuse, and he cut tied with all of them.
He is fond of his little sister, and hopes she grows up well despite their parents. One day, when she's grown and married, he hopes to return to Anglia and visit with her again.
Religious Views
He was raised Catholic, but is hardly devout. He doesn't put much thought into his Catholic beliefs, and if pressed, would probably admit to some form of deism.
Relationships
History
Thomas and Sophie met when Thomas attempted to run a con on Sophie's friend, Anne. Sophie was the one to call him out on it, and proceeded to scold him and accuse him of faking his disability. When he proved to her that his disability was real, she apologized for the accusation and continued scolding him. This frank, unsympathetic attitude to his disability impressed Thomas, and he ended up spending the evening with them.
