Trash Divers Species in The Call of The Tree | World Anvil

Trash Divers

Junkyard, one of Four great anomalies, is an enormous maze made out of all the things lost. Due to its ability to assimilate living beings, most creatures that wander it are weird hybrids of living beings and trash. There are, however, some creatures native to this place. One of its more well-known species is trash divers, also known as junk moles.

"Junk diving"

The name of those creatures comes from their ability to swim or maybe to squeeze through the walls made out of trash. It seems that no matter the dimensions or state of matter of which the walls consist, these beings seem capable of traveling through them without slowing down as if the whole wall was considered to be one continuous substance for their bodies or as if they somehow could squeeze through it. The "surface" of the trash doesn't move when a junk mole swims through it and only should the creature be hurt, it creates "splashes" in the form of junk being thrown around everywhere.

Appearance and anatomy

Describing the trash divers is hard as no one has ever seen the body of one of them. For the most part, their whole bodies are hidden inside either junk-covered walls or the floor of the Junkyard. The only part of their body that has ever been witnessed is their elongated arms. Said arms resemble those of humans but often reach a length of 2 meters or more. For their length, they are very thin, only 15 cm in circumference. Each arm has a hand at its end that is over 50 cm long, with most of its length consisting of fingers. There are five fingers at each hand. The skin on their arms takes on various colors from those similar to those of humans to the ones resembling the most common junk, such as various reflective metallic colors, colors similar to green or brown glass (even imitating transparency a little with an optical illusion), or color and texture of leather products. The arms are cold to the touch, quickly creating the sensation of burning when in contact with the bare skin. Due to the unknown anatomy of the junk moles, the number of arms each one of them possesses is still a mystery.

Senses

Trash divers are capable of finding and following other living beings seemingly without any line of sight. Unless their bodies really consider the mass of the trash to be a single substance, it can be only theorized that they find their prey through either echolocation, seeing in infrared, perceiving vibrations, or the flow of the Elements in the air.   They seem to have a sense of hearing and sight, as sudden loud sounds or flashes can scare them away or disorient them for some time.

Hunting

Junk moles are either a pack species or very long creatures with multiple arms. Whenever they hunt, there'll always be at least five pairs of arms showing up unless they quickly capture a singular prey. If they live as a pack, the trash divers are really coordinated when attacking. While one or two grab the legs of their victim (depending on the number of legs) and start to pull them down into the trash, another one will try to disarm it or lock any of its natural weapons. When one of them gets harmed, yet another one, one that seems to be always staying in the back pulls it away, either to safety or to hide its body. At that point, another one takes the place of the one that is out of commission.   Once the prey is at least partially submerged into the trash, the junk moles start their real attack, by trying to break the bones of the limbs underneath the "surface". And while their arms could seem frail and brittle, there is some monstrous strength inside of them. They continue to do so until the prey loses enough strength that it is easy to pull it down completely. After that, the victim is taken away and its final destiny stays unknown. Does it get eaten or just killed? Do they take it to their den or hide it somewhere in the walls of trash? The only thing known is that once in a while a completely mangled corpse can be found sticking out of the walls. There are no bite marks or any other evidence as if it was just abandoned there.   The trash divers only ever go after one or two victims, more if they are some smaller creatures. Once they take enough, they leave the rest of the group alone.

Intelligence when hunting

Junk moles mostly go after the wounded or tired creatures. However, they seem to know about human weapons and they are capable of recognizing the most dangerous member of the group as they will always try to divert their attention or disarm them so their kin that take part in the hunt won't get hurt.   On the other hand, while having an almost infinite source of ammunition or weapons for themselves, trash divers never use anything other than their own hands even if doing so would increase the chances of a successful hunt or lower the losses on their side.
Geographic distribution:
Junkyard. They stay away from the core of the anomaly as none of them have ever been spotted there, and similarly, they move close to the edge of anomaly only if they chase some prey.
Reproduction and growth stages:
It is unknown whether or how the trash divers show up in this world. Do they breed with each other and create young ones or are they just a creation of The Junkyard? While their arms and hands sometimes come in different sizes, no one knows if the smaller ones belong to the young of the species, if it is some gender dimorphism, or if it is just a simple variation between their kin.

Always hidden

Trash divers will never reveal themselves under any circumstances. They hide the bodies of their brethren should any of them get killed. Even if their prey was bleeding out only a few centimeters away from their fingertips, they would never stick out to reach it. They won't even do it for their own survival as there was a case where part of the fresh trash wall at the edge of The Junkyard was burning, with a junk mole inside of it. While it would be possible for it to save itself if it left the wall for a moment, instead, it burned alive, making terrible noises. Still, even the body of that one was never found, making some doubt if they even have anybody or if each one of them is just a pair of arms swimming around.

Scaring them away

There are three most sure ways to scare away the attacking pack of trash divers. The first one is to hurt them enough. Most weapons work against their arms, but if one truly wants to bring some pain to them, their best bet is to aim at the area between the arms with something capable of piercing through the trash. Both stabbing weapons such as spears and firearms will work. After hurting a few of them, the pack will usually try to look for prey that won't be as fierce or could be attacked by surprise.
The second is to bring something that produces either a very sudden loud noise or a series of repeating shrieking sounds. The louder the better.
And the third and the best working one is to set fire to the nearby trash. Junk moles start to panic when there is a fire involved, dropping their prey even if they aren't in immediate danger. However, one should watch out when setting a moving maze on fire as the only way to escape could close on them.

Well, these are kind of terrifying. No, thank you. I will stay away from The Junkyard.

Don't worry, most sane people would do the same as you. :D
