The whole thing is fucked up. It's fucked up that both my parents liked kissing Imperial ass so much they decided to risk their lives to lick it better. The genasi are the rare humans, elves, half-elves, halflings, and goliaths who have endergone the GENASI procedure (General Enhancement of Arcane and Somatic Intelligence)--or the offspring of two humanoids who have undergone this procedure, which is extremely unusual. This is a drastic arcane genetic modification offered to talented soldiers and spies who are then used in elite forces. It attunes the candidate to an element, and which some speculate is done by using genomes from creatures of the elemental planes. For this reason all genasi are attuned to either water, air, earth, or fire, with different elements providing different benefits. The GENASI procedure causes a number of changes, including an increase in height, a change in skin and hair colour to reflect the attuned element, and the introduction of new powers. However, these changes happen at the cost of innate racial abilities that the humanoid once had, as well as a legal obligation to remain in the army. The procedure to become a genasi is relatively dangerous, with a fatality rate of just over one-in-ten. However, surviving it often means an elevation to Amber Caste, guaranteed employment for the rest of your life, and a general increase in social status.
