Mythology & Lore
In the years before the arrival of humans, even during the early days of the elves' existence, a fierce and dreadful incursion took place in the heavenly sphere of Varaphic. A mighty battle raged between the celestial Vales and the relentless demonic hordes led by Ch’ar-Mut. At the direction of Valinos, Kona charged their leader, Helanos, with a daunting task: to confront this malevolent horde and utterly annihilate them without mercy.
During a pivotal moment in the battle, when the demonic forces teetered on the brink of annihilation, a twist of fate led to the capture of the valiant General, Helanos. As the devil lords gloated over their treasured prisoner, the army of the Vales faced a grave dilemma. Driven by their deep love and loyalty for their commander, they contemplated listening to the enemy's terms, a stark deviation from their orders to give the demonic forces no quarter. Helanos, though imprisoned, was horrified by their choice, recognizing that their actions contradicted the sacred code of unwavering devotion to their god, Valinos.
The infernal forces promised that, in exchange for a retreat, they would return their general unharmed and guarantee safe passage back to their realm. The Vales' profound love for their commander outweighed their devotion to Valinos, and so they agreed to these terms. As Helanos was returned to them, he immediately issued a rallying cry for his forces to turn and confront the remaining horde, as their promise to give the demons no quarter weighed heavily on his conscience. Many Vales followed their general's lead, but others were hesitant, bound by the agreement to retreat.
With only half of his forces, Helanos single-handedly annihilated the remaining infernal horde, his fury and determination unmatched. The gods, however, decreed that the Vales, having broken their oath and retreated to secure Helanos's release, must face destruction as punishment for their rebellion.
Faced with this dire decree, Helanos, their revered General, stepped forward, bearing the weight of his people's fate. With unwavering resolve, he addressed the divine assembly, "If it is decreed that the Vales must face destruction, I willingly offer myself in exchange for their lives. Spare them, for their love and devotion to me is immeasurable, and their actions were born of confusion and a misguided sense of duty."
While the gods remained resolute in their decision, they couldn't ignore the profound selflessness and unwavering commitment displayed by Helanos. It was evident that his actions were guided by a profound sense of responsibility and compassion. Helanos recognized an opportunity for the redemption and growth of his people and proposed an alternative to their impending annihilation.
He implored, 'If you can find it in your hearts to show them mercy, allow them to be exiled to Glosmordin, a realm separate from the heavenly spheres. Let them fall from their celestial glory, with only the knowledge that they once basked in Valinos' light but have now been cast out. Erase their memories of this existence, except for the understanding that they must undergo cycles of rebirth on Glosmordin until you, the gods, deem them redeemed or worthy to return. There, they shall have the chance to lead lives in harmony with divine values.'
Guided by Helanos's unwavering persistence and dedication to the Vales, the gods reconsidered their initial decree. Touched by his heartfelt plea and recognizing the potential for the Vales to chart their own path to righteousness in exile, they granted his request. Thus, the Vales were spared from destruction and exiled to Glosmordin, a world where they could endeavor to find redemption by living in accordance with divine virtues. The gods, in their divine wisdom, established a law for those Vales who did not take part in the final battle. Under this decree, they were forbidden from taking their own lives. Those who defied this law bore a hidden mark, an indelible symbol representing their choice. For a time, the Vales adhered to this law, and they all looked the same. However, as time passed, some Vales transgressed this decree.
When these transgressors returned, they bore striking resemblances to demons and devils, carrying the mark that revealed their pact. These marked individuals became known as the Sacrivales, while those who maintained their celestial appearances were distinguished as the Avales. This marked the beginning of a division among the Vales, an enduring legacy of their time in exile on Glosmordin.
Helanos, chosen as the agent to carry out the divine sentence, cast them into the great caldera of Valhaven. With admonitions to embrace valor and dedicate their lives to Valinos, he warned them that, that how they lived their lives on Glosmordin would have an impact on their return. He bestowed upon each a wooden engraving of their visage, and he instructed them that upon their eventual natural death or the gods' determination of their return, they must burn these engravings in an effigy. To further aid them on their path to redemption, Helanos gifted them with a sacred mirror. This mirror was to be used upon their return to carve their visage anew, marking their growth and progress in their journey back to Valinos' grace. Helanos's guidance and wisdom would serve as their beacon, even in a world far removed from the heavenly spheres.
Curious and seeking to know the name of their benevolent messenger, the Vales inquired. Helanos responded, 'I am Helanos, the chosen emissary of Valinos. I shall watch over you as directed by His divine will.'
Unbeknownst to the Vales at the time, a small group of dwarves known as the Havaki had witnessed this sacred interaction on the plains of Valhaven. This marked Helanos's introduction to the world of Glosmordin, where his name would become known and his status would eventually ascend to that of a god.
In gratitude for the divine blessings, Helanos forged a celestial weapon capable of sealing any portal to the demon's realm. With the strength of a Saint and unwavering determination, Helanos continued to stand as a sentinel against infernal incursions, ensuring they would never threaten the heavens again.
Helanos's penance led him to dedicate himself to teaching humanity the values of protection and honor, sharing his divine wisdom, and helping them strive for goodness and justice in their battles against darkness. Over time, he became a symbol of hope, protection, and redemption. Helanos's legacy served as a testament to his unwavering love for his people, his commitment to protecting the innocent, and his determination to make amends for the past.
