Un'li
The Practitioners of the Aether
"Say... in this world if there was truly such as thing as Great Magic, what would you think it would be? It's something we all aspire for as mages, but everyone whom I've asked always had a different answer!"-Student Adjunct at the Mage Tower
Culture
A magical-centric land that encompasses the very pinnacle of magical development and arcane comprehension in the world. Un'li is the capital of The Septum Confederation. They are united by familial houses known as the Septums alongside lesser mage houses that assist with governing the lands of Un'li. Each of the individual Septum houses vies for their house to expand their influence and to better the lives of their people. While all of these individuals are a mixed community of refugees from various former settlements, they are, for the most part, simple citizens with no magical talents. The few who are arcanely talented, are either a part of one of the houses or lives in Un'li as an independent mage family. While those who bear no arcane powers live their lives as regular citizens of the state. Un’li is the capital of the Septum Confederation with the city being split into various districts belonging to the individual Septums and has 3 levels known as Crescents in a semi-circular layout. The city has a large outer defensive wall with numerous houses stretching outside the walls that belong to the maladroits. The city’s grand entrance is adorned with the livery and colors of all the Septums and has a huge door that depicts a tree with branches each leading to a circular metal plaque with a Septums name inscribed on it. Inside the city, the roads are paved with smooth stone and are commonly lined with the colors of whatever septum owns the district. There are flags belonging to the Septums all around and numerous statues and decorations heralding whatever septum’s district you happen to be inside. The buildings are built of smooth stone and decorated through ornate chiseling with most taller buildings roofed with sharp-pointed spires.History
With spires of magical alchemic energy filled with blue flames that illuminate the land, the region induces a hue of cyan throughout. As the lands of Un'li sit on top of a massive Leyline, its abundance of power as the conduct of a wellspring connected to the Aether is potent. Though in recent times due to the Fell Star Incident, the spires' protective range has diminished, and the Leyline's powers have waned tremendously as a result. The Septum houses are separated into different regions of influence throughout the lands of the Aliech. While the Septum Houses have their own spheres of influence and their own lands, they fundamentally do not directly control the lands of Un'li. Instead, they are governed by the Lesser Families within Un'li, alongside the Septum's influence. In order to ensure no individual Septum oversteps its boundary, they keep each other in line via a form of checks and balances. As an arcane-focused land, the Septum Confederation focuses its efforts on those that can obtain a connection to the Well of the Aether As the Well is known to be the source of all things arcane, many wishes to utilize and comprehend its abilities. Despite having no magical abilities, individuals who still live in this land are valued as a source of labor and skill that the Confederation needs. They are the most abundant group of individuals who are under the protection of the Septum and the Lesser houses that resides in Un'li.People of Un'li
Septum
A rank bestowed upon those who are the familial heads of the Septum Confederation. These ranks are only given to those who are recognized as the heads of the respective houses. Bearing the rank of Septum gives them the ability to directly influence the Confederation. However, most cases require either all Septums to agree on a task, or a majority vote depending on the situation at hand. There are presently seven Septums that govern Un'li.Practitioners
Those of magical abilities who attempt to hone their skills are considered to be Practitioners. As this encompasses a vast breadth of casters from different schools and houses, the meaning is more so utilized to differentiate those who can bear the talent for the arcane arts, and those who cannot. While there is no major class disparity between Practitioners and Maladroits, there are minor instances of class divides that do occur on rare occasions.Maladroits
Embodying the majority of the Confederation's population are Maladroits, those who bear no arcane skills. This does not necessitate them to be beneath those who are Practitioners, rather a simple classification. There are many Maladroits whose skills outshine the Practitioners in terms of influence or power in other ways that are not arcane in nature.Septum Houses
Each of the Septums has its own respective region of influence that they control and the land they possess. With their own personal Mage Towers, they govern and rule their lands from there, spreading their influence into the outer regions of Un'li and across the Aliech Continent itself. Each of the houses has its own individual rules and mindsets. However, it is fundamental that all houses desire to comprehend the Well of the Aether and to utilize it in some way.Lesser Houses
The lesser houses are comprised of multiple houses which have some control of the Confederation but are not equal to those of the Septum rank. They instead mainly influence what governs inside of Un'li under the watchful supervision of the Septums. They have their own communal Mage Tower called the Grand Mage Tower that resides within the center of Un'li. Presently, there are four heads that govern the Grand Mage Tower. While they do not have the same level of influence as the Septums, some of the lesser houses bear lineages that exceed or are equal to the Septums. Many of these houses are found within Un'li only, as very few can afford to live on the outer regions of the city, lest they be consumed by creatures, or by the influence of those of the Septums.Government
As a Confederation, they are governed by the Septums and the Lesser Houses together. Each of the Septum carries one vote, while the Lesser Houses carry two votes. Most issues require a majority of the nine votes, but severe cases such as ousting a Septum or declaring war require at least a near overwhelming majority for it to pass.Defenses
In the case of the Lesser Houses, they send their best mages to confront the threats that are upon them. Those that are successful earn rewards and favor amongst their peers and the Septum themselves. They see combat as a way to distinguish themselves in the field, but many do find it barbaric and would prefer to do so academically. While the Septems themselves do not necessarily see combat as per their contract, they have been posed to unite as per their confederation rules to defend against anything that threatens any part of their lands. Whether it be monetary or physical support such as troops or equipment, it is provided. The majority of the town guards are Practitioners or Maladroits that bear mundane magical weapons for protection. Many of these weapons are made by House Zektar, but there has been an abundance of House Flammen equipment being sold in recent times.
