1. Grabs/seduces reader (line 1, page 1 (first 8 sentences))
2. Convey my voice
3. Establish the world
4. Introduce a likeable but flawed hero
5. What value is at stake? (what is it about / theme)
6. Foreshadow conflict (intro the unlikeable but not plastic antagonist)
7. Throw down the Gauntlet
