The Honenchloss

A series of tentative invasions into the nations of the The Northpact, though it was before the Northpact was officially created and these conflicts would, in fact, be the inciting events to it's piecing together in an official capacity.   Tentative though the invasion were, the forces of Åleland and Greniströnd will massively outnumbered by the invaders and stood little chance against their armies. Despite this, they marched out to meet them all the same.   To the shock of the invaders, and observers from all over, the small nations' armies held fast in the face of overwhelming odds and placed the first brick in the legend of their military professionalism. This unexpected resilience appeared time and time again throughout the conflict and their ability to march straight into the face of the enemy as if they didn't intend to stop lead to many a route, embarrassing the invaders and allowing the much smaller armies to push their massive columns around.   The invaders would eventually just cut their losses, and the two nations could bandy their victory about for the whole world to see, all the while nursing their wounds out of sight. Their tactics, while having proved effective, had the downside of large casualties. Less so than a stand-up firefight would have resulted in, but still, a casualty rate that would have been untenable in the long run and against a more dedicated enemy force.   Thus, Åleland and Greniströnd agreed to form the Northpact in an attempt to dissuade future invasion attempts, leveraging their building military reputation and the outward image of unity for their own protection. There is an inner realization that they can't stand against true invasion attempts that have not fully spread throughout the population. The balance of military officials who are aware of the real situation and those who have bought into the legend is a careful act of balance. If too many buy into the legend, they're liable to invite the destruction of the Northpact, but too many that have a realistic view and you run the risk of the military falling apart like dry dough when pressed.
