Åleland

Åleland was once the last bastion of the Old Empire at the far corner of the known world. An outpost, by the Empires standard, but a complete nation by ours, it avoided the worst of the backlash of the War of the Wyrms by simply being too far removed for most to care, or for Åleland itself to have much of a stake in the conflict.   A trait they have maintained since.   They could not fully avoid the collapse either, mind you, but theirs was far quieter, without all the death and destruction. much of their technology was commandeered by commanding forces as the war broke out, leaving the outpost to slowly decline until it was more of a loose collection of colonists, rather than an official outpost. By the time of the wars end, and with the addition of refugees that had braved the ice wastes in the hope of finding any means of survival out there, the collective had to decide on a path. They decided to try and form a unitary state, like many after the war of the wyrm. Through many votes, and a handful of small armed conflicts between dedicated parties, eventually, a constitution was hashed out that established the nation of Åleland as a parliamentary democracy.   The Hyôref people, who came from the population of the Old Empire outpost, make up the majority of the population of Åleland, a fact that was true at it's founding as well. This overwhelming representation lead to many of the others who had come to the area throughout the war to leave and head east, eventually forming their own nation, Greniströnd.   On certain rare occasions, Åleland has been eyed by much larger nations, viewing it as an easy target for conquest and pillaging. The  Honenchloss was the first and so far last time a foreign power attempted to put that idea to the test through a series of small scale invasion. Small scale for the invader, that is. Each invasion force was notably larger, though not inconceivably so, than the armies of Åleland and Greniströnd. Through a military practice societal outlook referred to as "akniza" (literally translating to 'grit' or 'through gritted teeth'), the armies of these small nations would march through withering fire directly into the face of the enemy with such energy that it appeared as if they might simply march until and over enemy formations. Their resolve, even in the face of overwhelming odds as the invasion columns linked up with each other, often caused panic in enemy ranks as the Northpact nations withered incredibly fire and assaults, only to come screaming back for more. Several routes would put the invasion forces on the run, and once put on the backfoot, it allowed the Northpact armies to push them around with surprising ease. Eventually the invaders would cut their losses and leave, simply wishing to forget about the embarrassment.    For the Northpact nations, this victory not only saved their nations but started to build a military legend about the resiliency of the nation's soldiers, as well as providing the inciting motivation for the creation of the Northpact on paper. They have, wisely, not attempted to put that legend to the test and simply remain to their own area of influence, small though it might be.

Åleland was the arbiter of the peace agreement between Greniströnd and Hønesøra after the War of Red and Blue Poppies ended, and the lynchpin in many of the agreement provisions that needed to be reinforced by an outside part, due to the belligerent nations relative equal footing in military power. This has placed Åleland in a politically superior position, paired with its greater military and economic power after the split of Greniströnd, has ostensibly left Åleland as the leader of of the Northpact.
