4. A River of Troubles

General Summary

After passing the night at Olek's Trading Post, the party continued north, aiming to ford the river at Hobb's Hollow and make for the fortress-town of Stagwall, where the paladin order could surely tell them more about the demon incursion.   About halfway there, the party was stopped by a dwarf riding a griffon. He wore a silk tabard with a thread-of-gold crest embroidered on it, and, after landing, called out to Morgren. He told the amazed dwarf that he had been summoned on a matter of great importance.   Morgren, who had never known much about his ancestry or connections in the wider world, could not pass the opportunity. He considered it a chance to uncover his destiny, and promised to try and leverage whatever noble house this messenger hailed from to help the party. They bid him a fond farewell, the messenger helped him onto the griffon, and the pair soon disappeared in the summer sky.   They found the river town in crisis. The ford was dry - an impassible crevasse of slick mud, sharp stones, and putrid algae. When they inquired in town, they met a dragonborn cleric named Torayah, who was able to tell them that Hobb's Hollow was under the protection of a Naiad. The Naiad had disappeared, though, and the gentle waters she controlled, which allowed the ford, were now impassible.   The party trudged upstream to consult the Naiad, and discovered that she was sickened, her river drying up due to the desecration of a mid-river shrine. The foul magics placed upon it were stinking up her river and making her sick.   She gladly gave the party directions, and they fought the harsh waters to a low atoll, where a squat ziggurat housed stairs leading down.   They descended into the dungeon, glad for the presence of a cleric as the unholy auras closed around them...
